How dressed up would you get for a party at someone's house?

.....because I was at one last night and was bemused at the range of things worn. A few people were wearing jeans, flat boots and a "daytime" type top, some were in skimpy little party dresses. Lots wore tunics, jeggings/opaque tights and heeled boots.

I felt slightly over-dressed in what I wore but as it was a "milestone" birthday party I had thought the glamourous grown-up look would be appropriate but I was obv the only one thinking that!

I went to one last night and as I knew it was a fairly informal crowd, I wore a long short-sleeved cardi layered over a 3/4 sleeved top, with a long pretty necklace, jeggings and heeled boots. There wasn't really anyone there in party dresses so I felt it was appropriate. I don't think people really dress up
for house parties unless they're told to.

tend to go for day dress and leggings type combo.

which means with DH's mates I feel overdressed, with allcomers in jeans and sweaters. and with mine I sometimes feel undressed, as they are a smart (and needless to say childfree) bunch.

bubblagirl · 07/02/2010 09:15

we usually tell anyone you can dress up or dress down how ever you feel comfortable there's always a range of clothes won from casual jeans and top to smart casual leggings and tunic or sparkly something and then smart nice dress etc think thats the fun of a house party you can go as you please no one judges

bubblagirl · 07/02/2010 09:16

i dress up as im SAHM rarely go out its my turn to feel good at a party the others wear smart clothes for work and love the fact they can dress down but there's always a few of us really smart and no one says anything we just have a laugh

MarthaFarquhar · 07/02/2010 09:17

'you can go as you please no one judges'

oh, but they do. if only in secret.

EdgarAllenSnow · 07/02/2010 09:17

i alwaya dress up to the max - i get so few excuses to do so, not dressing up would be a further waste of all those lovely dresses in my wardrobe.

bubblagirl · 07/02/2010 09:23

well maybe i just have a nicer group that we hang around with then as no one does judge

EdgarAllenSnow · 07/02/2010 09:38

well, i don't judge because there are people that just don't do formal wear. I love it though!

v. jealous at everyone that recently went to a party

brimfull · 07/02/2010 09:54

I would wear nice jeans and heels and dressyish top.Unless told otherwise.
We had party and I think one person was wearing dressy dress-she looked great and didn't feel out of place.

vesela · 07/02/2010 10:05

I reckon if in doubt, err on the side of dressing up because it's flattering to the person holding the party. Even if you end up feeling overdressed compared to others, it's nice for the host that you thought it was a party worth dressing up for.

Yes I also get few chances to dress up so make the most if it while I can! I wasn't judging anyone else, mire thinking I myself had looked "old" rather than "grown-up"!

Actually if I had taken off my (whisper) Boden bejewelled cardi I would have looked more casual but it was my first chance to wear it so I was making the most of it....

And I also felt a teeeny bit jealous of a couple of women who were dressed in fab & alternative outfits - that would have been so me twenty odd years ago but I have become more conventional in my dress...

PoppityPing · 07/02/2010 16:00

Oooo, what were they wearing? I love alternative stuff too, I don't know where to buy it nowadays

I would dress up, have to make the most of being out!

Stylelostinlabour · 07/02/2010 17:43

I'm having a house party in a couple of weeks and I'm dressing up as are all my friends, infact a couple asked "can it be dressy please!.

I think it depends on the people but I expect people to make an effort, maybe that's just me?

TheElephant · 07/02/2010 17:48
