Flattering trousers for large thighs!

Okay - I'm currently wearing jeans (I have 3/4 nearly identical pairs)almost every day. I'm not working at the moment but I'm fed updoing the school run in jeans every day. The other mums always look quite chic, imo, even though a lot don't work and are at home with the kids. I want to look like I've made an effort and not just fallen out of bed into jeans again. Basically though, my thighs are the bane of my life and buying trousers is a complete nightmare because my waist is very small compared to my hips/thighs/bum. Any ideas? I don't like flimsy as you can then see the shape of my legs through and I don't like anything cropped as it cuts me in half and looks terrible.

lucie I have the same shape, but can't be much help as I make no effort for the school run - am either working from home and in my Nike bottoms (very chavvy according to another thread), or on my way to the office on my bike! I've tended to go for baggy boyfriend jeans, they are v comfy but MIL says they make me look fat. Argh. I do like leggings/long tunics which I find OK if the tops cover the bum/thighs. I don't like crops either. I did get some M&S treggings which are quite thick material and look OK, again with longer tops. I also like jersey or knitted dresses.

crankytwanky · 06/02/2010 22:01

WTF are treggings? (Out of the fashion loop.)

luciemule · 06/02/2010 23:09

Hmmm - the whole treggings thing is a defo nope. Last time I wore anything remotely to do with leggings was when I was a trampoling 16 yr old.
At the moment, I try to wear slightly longer Fatface/White Stuff tops that end mid thigh so quite flattering. I was thinking of a more casual trouser rather than jeans but perhpas I'll just have to wait until my thighs are slimmer and I can get into all of my lovely 12/14 trousers. I'm just fed up with black trousers. Perhaps will look for some really dark, more smart denim jeans instead.

I have this problem.

Wear skirts

paddingtonbear1 · 06/02/2010 23:42

cranky treggings are a cross between leggings and trousers.
darker denim looks smart - my dark jeans are levis, quite a flattering cut. I have problems with casual trousers too, most don't seem to suit my shape! Not keen on skirts/tights really which is why I do the leggings/dress or tunic thing.

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 07/02/2010 00:04

Don't dismiss the treggings/leggings thing too quickly - I was horrified at the idea at first (having done them in the 80s), but if you can find the right boots and tops they are actually no less flattering (or unflattering) than bootleg jeans/trousers, and a LOT more comfy.

Boots need to be chunky to balance out thighs, mid-calf biker style are good.

luciemule · 07/02/2010 10:38

Problem is I have really wide, muscly calves and it's hard to find boots. Think I'll look for some dark denim smarter jeans like you said paddington. Will have another look at Treggings too but not holding out much hope on that front. I do really love wearing skirts but I always feel overdressed/not with it enough when I wear skirts - although my skirts are either long denim (Next/fatface) or other casual fatface/white stuff style skirts.

I'm afflicted in the same way, luciemule, and it's so tiresome.

I've given up on jeans, tbh. The most flattering pair I own were a cheapo pair from Mark One a few years ago. And, of course, they're light, summer jeans. Tut.

My Levis fit on the legs, but too big on waist and butt - so strictly for dossing (with longer length coats). Tut.

My GAP jeans fit on waist, but my legs have that "burst sausage" thing going. Tut.

For anything other than long walks, I wear knee-length skirts with tights and calf/knee-length boots. Or, leggings, but only with knee high boots and long shirts/sweater dresses.

MarthaFarquhar · 07/02/2010 13:00

you want wide-leg trousers, which are especially flattering if you are tall. heavy fabrics are better, and lined are best of all. they will skim your thighs and show off your waist, especially with a fitted top. can wear with converse or heels, depending on the occasion.

Agree with Cider that empire line dress and leggings really works if you balance the look with chunky boots.

MarthaFarquhar · 07/02/2010 13:04

this sort of thing

luciemule · 07/02/2010 13:32

Like those Martha - kind of like my current clack ones - actually, might have a look for some like that in Navy for spring - have some really cute red stitch ballet pumps that would lovely and nautical (nautical being done by Boden and Next this spring) espeically with a fitted top and my 3/4 length rain mac. Hmmmm - wide lef trousers it is then. Thanks Martha.

quite like these

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 07/02/2010 13:54

"Problem is I have really wide, muscly calves and it's hard to find boots"

These balance out skinny jeans/treggings a treat and will fit wide calves (I have some!), you can get black as well.

MarthaFarquhar · 07/02/2010 13:56

ooh nice boots Libra

luciemule · 07/02/2010 14:10

Love those trousers Martha but as they're wool and I have eczema and can't wear wool, I will look for similar in that style. Think it'll be worth my while looking at more expensive designs though as quality material and a good cut will skim my thighs better.
I'm now swimming for 40 mins 4 x weekly so hopefully they'll slim down soon too

I have a similar body shape and wear Toast slouchy flare cut jeans. They are cut really big on the thigh so are wide legged with a little flare but fit round hips and have a cinch tab on the bag for one's waist. They are not the height of fashion, quite the reverse, and are vilely expensive but they are the only jeans I have ever found that suit me and they do really last.

luciemule · 07/02/2010 17:27

Not sure about whether I looked at the right ones (they have a sale on) but do like the company - hadn't seen it before so will defo go back and buy their lovely Australian slippers!
