Has anyone used Bio-Oil ??????

I went to see my consultant this week and he advised me to start massaging my very poorly c-section scar (has been opened since and infected).

He said something with witch hazel was preferable but if not just my usual moisturiser would be fine (i use Vaseline esential daily).

When I went to Boots yesterday the woman recommended Bio oil. She said its really good on scars.

I just dont know if its something I should be using in a few months time as I am only 9 weeks post surgery atm. Or would it be better to start using it now and massage it in daily. I think the reason he wants me to massage is to reduce the scar tissue as there is quite a lot, rather than minimise the appearance it.

Any ideas?

I used Bio-Oil on my bump when pregnant, but I am not sure if it's really the right product for a scar that has only just healed. If it has completely healed, then it should be ok.
There is a cream that was recently recommended to me, from the Avene range, that is supposed to be very good for healing - e.g. post plastic surgery. It's called Cicalfate. I have been using it on spots on my fact to help them heal.
It may be worth a try.
You can buy Avene products from any chemist in France or Italy, but in the UK you have to order it from Amazon.
Here is a link: www.amazon.co.uk/Avene-Cicalfate-Antibacterial-Repair-Cream/dp/B000ZP20C6

Not sure I want to buy a cream from Amazon for my scar (no disrespect).
I wondered if it was too early also, it has healed but only been healed about 3 weeks now.

Anyone else used Bio for scars?

I use it for old self harm scars, and I have noticed a difference, more so on the fresher ones. My cousin also used it with good results oin a surgery scar, she recommended it to me.

LastTrainToGeneva · 06/02/2010 17:05

I used it on an old burns scar on my arm and it had a very definite lightening effect It has not disappeared completely, but that would be asking for a miracle as it was very bad. But it has faded to the point that noone notices any more and that is enough for me

Hi there, I've been a Bio-Oil devotee for over 8 years now. I rub it on my neck and chest/breast area after every shower - I used to have stretch marks on my boobs for years but they are now practically invsible.

I rubbed it in to my c/s scar too, every day from about 3 weeks post op, and that's also very difficult to see a year later.

On thicker scars, the rubbing action (small, firm circles) contributes as much to the effectiveness as the oil itself but it's all good.

p.s. you can buy Bio-Oil on Amazon

crankytwanky · 06/02/2010 20:45

Ooh half price on Amazon!

Thanks losters! Have just ordered meself a vat of the stuff.

That Avene stuff looks good too. May try next month. (Nowt wrong with Amazon.)

PoppityPing · 07/02/2010 01:29

DS1s scar was improved mildly with Bio oil

I use Amazon all the time, it's great.

I used it for jellyfish sting scars. It is brilliant! it makes the scars feel so much more comfortable and you see a reduction in their appearance too. I would recommend it highly! I bought mine in Sainsbury on the pharmacy counter...do look around as you can get it cheaper in some places and it is expensive, but well worth the money!

mosschops30 · 08/02/2010 12:40

great thanks, and good to hear that some people have used it quite soon on scars.
Cheap smells has it quite cheap and I have other stuff to order from there so will get myself some and see how it goes

Use it regularly mosschops, it lasts ages so you aren't likely to run out quickly just because you use it 4 times a day

MrsMotMot · 08/02/2010 13:20

I think Bio oil has been trialed and does have a lightening effect on scars, but it's the rubbing and massaging which stimulates healing/breaking down if scar tissue as well, which'll be why your consultant recommended it. Bio oil is pricey but has lots of devotees. I personally loathe the smell of it!

Meglet · 08/02/2010 13:26

I like it. Got my last bottle half price on Amazon too. Its one of the only body moisturisers that doesn't give me spots and I used it on my tummy during both pregnancies.

Am trialling it on self harm scars but its too early to tell yet.

Offensive add though!

"Scars and stretch marks make me feel less of a woman blah blah"

CrowAndAlice · 08/02/2010 13:34

Sorry not very relevant - but it's the one ad that makes me shout at the screen .

solo · 08/02/2010 13:38

Well, my jellyfish sting scars looked like I'd been slashed with knives and I have the faintest mark left on my forearm...one out of 16 ain't bad! and I have to really look for it too.

mosschops30 · 08/02/2010 16:13

well fingers crossed for my gruesome looking c section scar then

Not so much in relation to scars sorry, but I've been using Bio Oil on my bump the last few months and I love the feel of it after, sort of moist but not greasy. Can you use it on your face? And will it block pores do you think?

solo · 09/02/2010 01:01

It's fine on faces as far as I know...think I might see if it fades out soft lines on the forehead!

Kaloki · 09/02/2010 01:03

It actually says on (or in) the packaging that it is good for facial blemishes too

solo · 09/02/2010 01:06

Excellent! my box/leaflet is long gone!
