Clothes for hiding horrible belly.

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 10:00

I am fed up of wearing DH's horrible fleeces in winter to hide my stomach. I really like the look of some cardigans but I don't want to wear them as I have this fat stomach.

What tops can I wear while I am losing weight that disguise my stomach but still look fashionable?

Thanks.

Tunics, jumper dresses over jeans, layered tops.

motherlovebone · 04/02/2010 10:23

clothes in the right size.
sounds obv but too big or small adds lbs.

hellsbelles · 04/02/2010 10:42

I too found layering made a big difference - as you can't tell what are folds of material vrs folds of fat

So a long vest top under jumpers, tunics - works well. Also jersey material seems a forgiving fabric (if in a loose style)

I've got this from Wallis that does a good job of hiding the c sectioned belly - www.wallis.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=20551& storeId=12557&productId=1562649&langId=-1&categoryId=&parentcategoryrn=

hellsbelles · 04/02/2010 10:46

elemental - that is exactly the sort of jersey shape that I meant!

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 10:50

That is a really nice dress Elemental.

I will have to try the layering.

That's a lovely dress,Elemental. But my fear about wearing things like that (I'm a 16/18) is that people will think I'm actually pregnant...

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 11:03

Dotty, I am the same size as you and I can see why people might think you are pregnant.

Having had people ask me several times when my baby was due when I haven't actually been pregnant, it's something I live in fear of...I have quite a slim face and arms and my weight is mostly on my belly and bum, so I do appreciate where they are coming from!

To go back to your original question, I've been trying to layer more recently, and I do think it looks better. (More washing though). And I think drapy tops over the tum are good, but better without the empire line, which particularly gives you a potential-maternity look, I think. Found some great cheapish ones before Christmas in the M&S Autograph Essentials range. Can't do links, but for something similar search on the M&S site with: Autograph Essentials Front Drape Long Sleeve Top

I have to say that I disagree that jumper dresses or jersey dresses/tunics will hide a tummy. In my experience, they tend to emphasise the lumps and bumps by being just a bit too clingy.

I was paying proper attention to what people were wearing this week and I think it's true, a jumper dress over jeans can make you look more lumpy in the tummy area if you're not careful.

I think the right kind of drape is essential. Or a slightly more structured shape so that it has a shape and doesn't just skim over lumps, showing that they are there (taking it's overall silhouette from you). Or other types of material, something heavier than a thin knit or jersey. Maybe cotton in a more shirt-like shape (less clingy)? Dotty P and pretty much everywhere have lots of shirt dresses right now.

I think it's really hard actually. Especially treading the line between hiding tummy and looking 20 weeks pg. I have this issue too. Looking at what other people are wearing makes me realise that quite a lot of tops/tunics/dresses really don't help people at all.

I'm not trying to be unhelpful - I'm hunting out this kind of thing for myself so will keep you posted what I find. But layering can work and I think shirts might be a saviour (with long sleeve ts under and cardis over?).

NorkilyChallenged · 04/02/2010 13:20

For example, Dotty2's example of this drape top would work much better than this other drape jersey top because the first one has draping in the tummy area whereas the second one is actually quite clingy and flat in the tummy region.

If that makes sense?

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 13:25

Yes that makes sense to me. I'm quite happy with the rest of my body but my stomach is awful.

make the first layers some of gok wan's structured undies in the right size...look on the look good naked website

NorkilyChallenged · 04/02/2010 13:33

Would this work for you? There's one with a pattern which might be good (I find solid colour emphasises my tummy a bit if it doesn't hang right). I like this dress as it gives a waist but then the way the dress falls from the middle would help disguise tum a bit? Might not work in practice though, I've not tried it on!

Long shirt I was talking about,t hough the material might be a bit too stretchy in reality. Need something non-stretch I think. This one might be better.

I've got something similar to this shirt from H&M that is a little bit longer and I wear it to work with smart trousers, feel it hides tum but doesn't look too maternity-like.

happywheezer · 04/02/2010 13:40

I have the same problem as you. I have gone with the tunic route, bought one from Boden so we will see how that goes. I bought a long shirt from Primark in Charcoal for 10 pound, so when I am slim (if only) again, it won't be too much of a loss. My husband said I looked nice, which makes a change!

Kayzr · 04/02/2010 13:40

I love all those thanks. I will order myself some stuff on payday and see how it looks.

empire line tops, that is fitted on bust, seam underneath bust, then looser fitting below.
I am size 10 so slim, but still have a bigger belly from 2 cc I have found this is the shape that works

Pannacotta · 04/02/2010 14:52

This is good for a wobbly belly, give a nice smooth line under tops
