Sainsburys think girls shouldn't dress up as police officers or chefs!

provocative title to get you going folks, please do read on! I went to sainsbury's today and was livid! All the children's clothes are labelled 'girls' and 'boys' even though anyone who has lived in our society would intuitively guess which ones are for girls and which... ones are for girls because of the strict colour coding in place. the fancy dress costumes are an outrage, like the rest of the clothes they too are labelled for 'girls' or 'boys'. Boys costumes are Policeman, Chef and Woody from Toy Story Girls costumes are Nurse and the obligatory 'princess' and fairy outfits. I cannot believe that in 2010 Sainsbury's have segregated the jobs into costumes in such an age old sexist way! It blows my mind, for the last 30 years teachers amongst others have been trying to lift girls aspirations beyond the traditional (and in the case of nursing highly valuable) occupations and encourgae boys to see beyond the stereotypes that are made for them. Of course we can buy what we want for our children, but they can read and have already seen that girls can't be policemen as far as this shop is defined. Sainsbury's should get a grip, stop re/producing this sexist drivel and respect the hard enough job that parents already have to do without adding to the layers and layers of gendering arghhhh!!!!! LETS BOYCOTT clothes buying at Sainsbury's hell lets boycott sainsburys until they stop lablling their children's clothing range!

I agree with you until I think about it abit.
Would you buy your son a fairy outfit? In theory I would if he had asked for one, I let him play with his sister's dolls but I didn't buy him one of his own but when I bought him a policemans hat my daughter got one too he had lego my daughter had the pink set, she has makeup and hair stuff my son now has long hair but no accesories and doesn't have guyliner she wears trousers and skirts he only wears trousers. I've felt a bit sorry for blokes for a long time because women, quite rightly have been able to and encouraged to go into all professions yet when a man wants to be a nurse or a hairdresser he must be gay or he's suspected of something because he wants to work with kids. I have always told my kids that they can be and do what they want and at home they see both parents working and cooking and cleaning but they still expect to see a lady on the till in a shop and a policeman in a police car. What can we do!
