Is this really all that odd?

At work today I am wearing a long soft-cord 'shirt'. It comes down to my knees.
And a pair of knee-length boots, and tights.

It's quite 'decent' and I thought I looked OK. But everyone has been giving me funny looks and my manager told me to tuck my shirt in amidst much hilarity and someone else asked me where my jeans were .

Does it sound all that odd to you?

Have seen many women wearing just what you describe and I never thought anything odd about them. What sort of environment do you work in? Is it a very stuffy sort of place? Or is there a higher proportion of middle-aged men? Younger men are more in touch with fashion IME than older men.

Ignore

sounds nice. they're idiots. you need a good mn come back. not my strong point but will get thinking...

OrmRenewed · 03/02/2010 11:07

"Or is there a higher proportion of middle-aged men" Yes!!! Thing is I'm a middle-aged woman So maybe that's the problem.

Got so bored of my uniform of just-below-the-knee straight skirts and jumpers/shirts and flat shoes. Dull dull dull!

Sounds abit odd to me. Does this shirt have a belt making it look more like a shirt dress?

OrmRenewed · 03/02/2010 13:01

No belt. But it's slightly waisted.

They sound like nobbers, Orm. Do they normally bully you/others like this? Come back David Brent, all is forgiven!

You sound fine to me/us. Give them very funny looks in return.

Flightattendant · 03/02/2010 13:08

as long as it is not see through.

I have made this mistake in the past sadly.

OrmRenewed · 03/02/2010 13:11

No not seethrough. Oh the shame Poor flight!

It's odd. I am the only woman in the dept and so far I didn't think anyone noticed what I wear. I have been wearing some shorter skirts and dresses with leggings recently which I thought were 'odder' but no-one complained then

Was also thinking that a belt would make it look more "meant" as an outfit, rather than something missing.

Do you think you are unwittingly giving these middle aged men a problem so to speak as they imagine your missing jeans? .

OrmRenewed · 03/02/2010 13:19

Hmmm I did try a belt but it is not very flattering - think sack with string tied round the middle. Also it makes it very short.

Yes I did wonder if perhaps they were taking a bit too much notice of what was going on with my legs

Hmmm. I wonder what kind of tights these are.

You mention leggings were not commented on.

Well...I have never understood why, but my good friend once wore a short dress to school in the 6th form. She wore it with rather slinky tights, prob around 40 denier, but still, they had that kind of shaded/graduated look about them (iykwim) ie Not opaque.

She had beautiful legs, not skinny but well developed and muscular and shapely.

The thing was, that I think set off the comments, was that she chose tow ear on top of this outfit a shortish, very padded jacket. It kind of came down to the same place as the frock, so to an observer it looked as though she had no skirt on at all.

It doesn't make sense even now but somehow, the thin-ness of the tights made it look kind of 'wrong'. She had several wolf swhistles and comments about forgotten skirts on the way to school but once there and sans manteau, was fine. But she swore it was down to her legs and never wore dress again

Could this be relevant in any way?

Flightattendant · 03/02/2010 13:39

The bit where i never understood why, is re the way the coat made such a difference!! I know why she wore the dress, because she liked it I think

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 13:46

Hmmm. Outfit might look odd if tights aren't thick enough- you almost need to wear good leggings rather than tights. Does it have a shaped bottom hem (ie goes up at the sides)? If so, someone in my office wears a dress like that with tights - all looks fine from the front and back, but you can see the thicker thigh/gusset bit of her tights (IFYKWIM) from the side. And her dress is a tad short, so when she bends down or goes up stairs, you can clearly see gusset.

If none of the above applies, ignore them because they are odd, old and fogeyish!

OrmRenewed · 03/02/2010 13:48

Yes, it's shaped like a man's shirt the boss. But it's long enough to cover those bits that should be covered...unless I wear it with a belt in which case it is a bit .

I think I look nice.

Thick black tights.

Sounds nice to me if it covers all the essential bits then I can't see the problem.

Maybee your colleagues need a stylist.

TheBossofMe · 03/02/2010 15:10

Orm, I think your colleagues are very dull, in that case, the outfit sounds really stylish and on-trend, which is sometimes difficult to achieve in one go! Keep on wearing with pride!
