My DH had the same- veneer looks great- can't tell. Cost him around £400- but can be as high as £600.

I have veneers on my incisors. I can't remember the cost. The procedure involved filing away the ridged surface of the teeth, and bonding on the wafer thin porcelain veneers.

I have three veneers, have had them for about 6 years now. I got them on the NHS and I think they cost about £150 each. I don't think you can get them on the NHS any more though. They do look good, I got them to cover crooked teeth though and in retrospect I wish that I had just had a couple of teeth out and a brace. I am now stuck with veneers forever as they had to file down the teeth underneath to make them fit.

thanks fo the info, gosh, it is quite pricey,I think it will have to be put on the back burner until I am no longer a sahm.

Have to say, have been very scared of the idea of having a tooth or teeth out - why would you prefer a bridge Marion?

(Also rather alarmed at idea of having teeth filed down to fit veneers.)

Have slightly crooked bottom teeth with a gap because of the crookedness but too much of a wuss to have irreversible work done esp if might involve damaging the teeth underneath.

when my tooth was discoloured, near front, yrs and yrs back they just did a crown. of course this meant they filed my tooth right down. is a veneer a different thing these days.?

Asking cos my crown needs re doing, but thats not too bad cos it's lasted 20 yrs!! Am going nhs tho.

I had two veneers on front two teeth and one side about ten years ago. Cost 250 pounds for each one. Never been keen on them They always feel too fragile. I can't bite into anything hard like an apple or a biscuit or they'll break. Teeth are filed down a lot less than they are for crowns. I have to cut up hard fruit and break hard biscuits etc before I put them in my mouth. The side one shattered when a bit on a soft (!) sweet two years ago. I asked for it to be replaced with a crown. This covers the whole tooth and feels much more solid. I can also feel the top edge of the veneers under the gum with a nail. I would never have them again. You trust a dentist to do what's best don't you? I think mine was only concerned with making as much profit as possible. There's no way a veneer should cost 250.

I just had 7 veneers fitted in October. I paid about £3.5K all in and they look fantastic. (I had saved up for years to afford them).

I can eat apples and ginger nuts and anything else really.

My teeth were [cringe emoticon] sanded down prior to the veneers being fitted but it wasn't painful and I don't regret it for a second.

The dentist who did my veneers told me NOT to bite into anything hard if I wanted to keep the veneers. They are fragile.

laurajane12345 · 03/02/2010 19:19

Hi,
have you considered 'internal bleaching?'
The discolouration is common after root canal treatment. The old filling is removed to access the root canal filling which is sealed over. Essentially some bleaching material is sealed then sealed inside the tooth. It can be really effective and saves drilling the tooth. You would need possibly 3-4 visits and have the tooth refilled at the end of treatment. Veneers are great but do have their downsides and then you can always have one in the future.
Just lurking but the post caught my eye.
Hope this helps?

My DH has a veneer as I said and was not told that he needed to avoid biting into anything hard! he also has several crowns on molars and was told not to bite anything hard with those!

Veneers and crowns are totally different- veneers are used to give cosmetic results mainly on front tetth and the tooth is filed slightly- crowns are often used on incisors or molars when the tooth has crumbled or cannot be filled any more-a s long as they can leave a peg-stump they can fit the crown over the top.

Crowns are used to save the tooth whereas veneers are more to make a tooth look nicer if it is discoloured or is slightly chipped.
