Dresses and skirts for pears

Montifer · 30/01/2010 21:57

My Duo boots have arrived and I love them already

Just need some skirts / dresses to wear them with and my jeans can have a well earned break.

Pretty sure I am a pear, reasonably slim top half and waist with generous bottom and mahoosive saddlebags which make my hips the widest part.

I'm thinking knee length or just below A line skirts and empire line dresses.

Does this sound reasonable to you experts and where should I shop?
I have a modest budget

TIA

I would go for above the knee skirts or dresses.

Montifer · 30/01/2010 22:02

Thanks Dexter, but yikes, knees are OK but thighs are a bit thunderous.

Any suggestions where I could look for some ideas?

If knees are ok then show them off! Will look for some skirts/dresses and link to them.

Thanks Ducky, T and S confirm my pear suspicions and that I'm thinking along the right lines with A line skirts and Empire line dresses with my new boots.
Have to say I disagree with their suggestion of bootcut trousers, wide legs are far more flattering IME, especially side fastening.

The thing that I always find suits me best is a strapless evening dress, fitted top to waist and then floaty or flared skirt to knee or mid calf, I have several and love wearing them but not very practical for everyday wear.
So my wardrobe currently consists of evening dresses and jeans.

Any links or suggestions for shops / sites would be much appreciated.

Yes I'm pear-shaped and I like the A-line skirt plus boots look. Skirt just on or just below the knee and wear with a fitted top half, eg a close-fitting v-neck jumper, or vest and little cardie. Also looks good with a simple, neat knee-length coat that stops just above the skirt hem.

MarineIguana · 30/01/2010 22:46

White stuff always good for the skirts, though my fave one of all is from Kew.

dexter73 · 30/01/2010 22:52

I like this. You could get it in the petite length.
Can't go wrong with a denim skirt.
Saw this and couldn't resist!

Montifer · 30/01/2010 22:58

Thanks guys.

Marine that's the style idea I have in my head and have quite a few tops but no skirts / dresses to make it a reality. Will have a look at Kew and White Stuff.

Dexter I like the 1st skirt, not sure the model is a pear (maybe a wafer thin slice of one).
I have asked Next not to use my cowgirl photos but they just won't listen

She looks more like a pipe cleaner than a pear!

Clure · 31/01/2010 10:29

how about something like this from monsoon
or this not sure how tall you are in relation to where the skirt would come, I would suggest on or just above the knee is generally most flattering
this from esprit -have some nice skirts
denim pencil skirt
white stuff do lots a-line style

piratecat · 31/01/2010 10:42

Sounds as tho am the same sort of shape as you Montifer. Altho not sure what height you, are, i am only 5.3.
I like the A line denim skirt look, but my knees are fat. Do I therefore look for one that is just on the knee, as opposed to below it.

I love skirts on other people, i just look rubbish in them it seems, or i just don't feel confident. I suppose,as in everything it's finding the correct one!

Montifer · 31/01/2010 11:52

Thanks Clure, love the White Stuff skirts. Have never worn their clothes before, do you know how their sizes measure up?

I'm 5'6", need to measure my vital statistics as sizes seem to vary so much.

Pirate, I think you're right about confidence, I read somewhere that your skirt should end at your slimmest bit.
I'm sure you don't look rubbish in all skirts, it's just finding the right style that you feel 'right' in.

montifer, have not worn white stuff so not sure how they measure up, they are lovely though

duckyfuzz · 31/01/2010 15:29

white stuff great for a line skirts and cut on the generous side, I am 5'7 and they are a nice length on me, just below knee (but am apparently a column not a pear )

MarineIguana · 31/01/2010 21:54

I think the knee thing depends on your knees - my legs look good below the knee, so I like the skirt to just cover the knee and it gives an illusion of slimmer legs. If it's higher and shows my blobsome knees, the effect is ruined! But if you have nice shapely knees, on or above the knee will look good.

I find white stuff are large-ish in skirts - I usually wear a 14 or sometimes 12, and I'd consider my bottom half a 14-16 normally.
