If I get a slanket and wear it in public, will I be pointed and laughed at by small children?

We're going to Australia at the end of March and I think a slanket would be brilliant for the flight, as well as being generally lovely and cosy in the evenings (would save on heating too [smug green emoticon])

But is this something that you should wear strictly in the privacy of one's own home? Or is the prospect of a 24 hour flight with a 4 year old DD scary enough to warrant taking additional creature comforts?

I used my gorgeous cashmere pashmina to that end on similar flights - probably drew fewer looks

angelene · 26/01/2010 13:37

True, true. But a slanket is hugerer and looks very warm. And is probably much more reasonable.

will you be wearing jeggings or treggings with said slankett?

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 26/01/2010 13:47

get a travel wrap instead.

trice · 26/01/2010 13:52

get one for your dd (I have a four year old dd who loves hers it was £3 from the petrol station and she uses it in the car on cold mornings). then you can borrow it when no one is looking.

Wallace · 26/01/2010 13:52

I would definitely wear one on a flight

AuntieMaggie · 26/01/2010 13:55

I wanted one for xmas but didn't get it but am seriously considering on for work as its been bloody freezing in the office so yes I would wear it on a flight - everyone else will just be jealous!

angelene · 26/01/2010 14:03

Eleanora I saw some jeggings for the first time on Saturday - even though they were on a lithe 17 year old it was still a shock. And ski pants are back!

So no, I am far too old and 'curvy' (she says euphemistically) for jeggings.

I think I'll get one. And one for DD too so at least she won't laugh at me. If the worst comes to the worst I can give it to my mum who's always cold.

Bad idea

You'll end up sitting next to the grim reaper.

I would say you probably need something more adjustable than a slanket for the plane - it can be boiling hot on those flights as well as freezing, and can even alternate, so you want something you can lift on and off easily. And layers underneath. And the Slanket will be annoyingly bulky to cart about the airport on a 26 hr + odyssey.

blinks · 26/01/2010 14:44

i say you should rock the shit out of that fucking slanket.

jackie o's

leather gloves

latest Vogue.

slanket.

angelene · 26/01/2010 15:42

I think blinks has the best idea.

Unfortunately accessorising with needy 4 year old DD might detract from the look a tad.

do not wear this in public

mrsshackleton · 26/01/2010 17:26

Step

Away

From

The

Slanket

traumaqueen · 26/01/2010 17:31

I assume you have given up all hope of an upgrade because they will NEVER let you past the back row of cabbage class in a slanket. But then DD has probably put paid to that anyway.

jamaisjedors · 26/01/2010 17:54

OMG!!!! at that link

I thought we were talking some kind of blankety big cardigan pashmina styly thingy...

Don't they give you blankets on long-haul flights?

hatwoman · 26/01/2010 18:00

pmsl. do they have backs or is it like a hospital gown wth a great big gap?

angelene · 26/01/2010 21:07

Well I wouldn't be wandering around the airport in it or anything, just on the plane. But yes, traumaqueen, there's no point even hoping for an upgrade with a 4 year old in tow.

hatwoman yes it is like a hospital gown so it's for sitting/sleeping rather than wearing as such. Imagine MNing in such cosiness!

They have taken the nation by storm this Christmas though, although I think that the double slanket is frankly a slanket too far.

A fleece blanket of some description is a great idea - the blankets you get on planes now are horrid and v skimpy. Take a pillowcase with you so you can fold the plane blankets into better pillows, then use a fleece blanket to make you cosy. They roll up neatly if you use a couple of hair bands to keep them like that.

And tbh, no matter how you look in leggings, leggings and a loose tunic top cannot be beaten for comfort on a very long flight. Take some slipper socks to keep your feet warm too

CarrieHeffernan · 27/01/2010 14:07

You are seriously considering your fashion options for a 24 hour flight? I'd stick on a trackies, bring a fleecy blanket and bed down. Nobody will give a shit.

littledawley · 27/01/2010 14:09

Have you seen this?

TuppyGlossop · 27/01/2010 14:49

The youtube parody is very funny. The slanket was the must have halloween costume for 13 year old boys in October so maybe you will be seen as making some sort of ironic fashion statement. Or maybe not.
