Has anyone tried home highlighting kits?

something like this.

I'm struggling to cover my grey without going too dark for my skin tone and as a SAHM I don't feel I can really justify the cost of lowlights.

Are these any good? I've medium brown shoulder length hair (so wouldn't necessarily use the colour in the link)

Hello. I too have medium brown hair and had a go on a couple of occasions with hair lightening kits. Both were pretty disastrous and resulted in very expensive trips to Regis to have my hair stripped and redyed so it was completely knackered. I'm generally good with hair stuff but this was awful. The peroxide content is quite low and I just ended up with orangy streaks. Have you thought about using a semipermanent colour to dye your hair but without being too drastic? I found the loreal casting dye's quite good, they have a nice range of browns and gradually fade over time. They covered my grey fine. Good luck!

I bought the LOreal one but had a reaction when I did the patch test so didn't go ahead

Don't Use a home kit!!!!! You will convince yourself it will be ok but in my experience-I too have shoulder length brown/greying hair it NEVER is!!!!

I use a brown nice and easy colour every 4 weeks...I have had hilights before-at home and at the hairdressers and both have been a disaster-The blonde colour makes my natural brown look even darker ie badger like and I hated it.

I now just use brown-nothing darker as my skintone can't take it.

I did and ended up with yellow hair. Not blond...yellow. It took a very long time and was very expensive to fix. Don't do it

Gosh - that's a resounding no then! Thanks for saving me a trip to the hair dressers.

I currently use a semi-perm (dark blonde as anything else is too heavy for my very pale skin). I put one on a week or so ago and my grey has sneaked through now. I should really leave it on for longer but again it makes my hair too dark. Grrrr.
