Help me justify buying Clarins!!!

I am a mother of three and am trying to justify my passion for clarins(financially, that is)(excuse spelling).

I have normal skin with no problems , so do you think it is worth the money just to feed my passion!!!!

Yes definitely. Just because. I've tried cheaper products and they don't work. I use a combination of brands and usually have some clarins on the go.

VerityBrulee · 24/01/2010 15:37

Well, Clarins smells lovely, and the packaging is beautiful

There are lots of other cheaper moisturisers that will do the job just as well if you have no specific problems, but if using Clarins makes you happy, go for it I think.

The best thing you can do for your skin is use an SPF every day.

MrsMattie · 24/01/2010 15:39

I don't, personally. I really do think the cosmetic industry is a load of old guff, selling very cheap, basic creams to gullible ageing women based on expensive packaging and brand name.

I used to be a Clarins/Clinique/Chanel junkie, but then started using the oil cleansing method + a very high factor facial sunscreen in the sunnier months. My skin has never been so good.

I can't believe I used to spend hundreds of pounds a year on face cream!

dingdong3 · 24/01/2010 15:59

Tell us more MrsMattie...what oil do you use? And what SPF cream? All the inexpensive SPF creams I've ever used made me flare up so while I don't use an expensive cleanser, I always buy an expensive moisturiser..

emsyj · 24/01/2010 16:13

You wear your face every day. You would probably think nothing of spending £30 on a pair of trousers or a dress that you might wear once a fortnight for a few months - why would you not think it was good value to spend the same amount on a cream that protects your skin and makes you feel good every single day?
I am very frugal in many areas and don't buy what I don't need. However, I do think that Clinique Total Turnaround is gold in a tub. So I buy it. And I don't feel guilty. I am also happy to spend money on perfume (I wear it every day), bras (ditto!) and nice make-up. I don't have a huge box full of make-up that I never wear - that WOULD be a waste of money IMO. I buy very few items but I buy nice quality, get advice from the sales assistant on the counter, try before I buy and use up every last scrap because I only buy things that I know will suit me and that I will use regularly. I have a small make-up bag with things that I use every day - and another small one with extra bits for special occasions, like a darker eyeshadow, a pot of High Beam etc. It's about making sensible choices. If Clarins works for you, buy it, use it, enjoy it and don't feel guilty.

fayeso · 24/01/2010 17:56

Thanks-I think you are right emsyj-if what you buy gives a little bit of pleasure everyday surely it is worth it-and if it stops you experimenting with cheaper products which can then become expensive as you are always on the look out for new products then that is good isn't it? I too like expensive make-up-I don't buy alot but what I do buy is correct for skin tone and skin.

Thanks

Its off to the Clarins counter I think-
oh yipee!!!...................

Gosh I won't use anything but clarins or guinot on my face! Sorry if that sounds pretentious but I've tried other stuff and it doesn't come anywhere close. Plus they use plant extracts and know their stuff. I've used it since I was 21 and had no problems which I put down to clarins. Plus I don't want to look like an elephant at 60 so will spend my money wisely now!! Don't mind using cheap body creams but your face is so much more sensitive and shows age more than anything. Go spend!!

Mongolia · 24/01/2010 19:49

Aparently the effects on the skin more expensive creams have can only be seen under the microscope.

I used clarins for years, changing circumstances (£) sent me into the hands of ANew (well, yes AVON!). My skin is way better, the only negative difference I can see is that now I'm more reluctant to tell everyone about how wonderful my new moisturiser is, just because they won't understand my new passion for a product sold by Avon.

TBH, I don't hink one moisturiser is better than another, it is all about finding the one that suits your skin.

Freyfreysmum · 24/01/2010 20:41

The Clarins Delicious Self Tan is the best I have ever used. However, I have moved from Clarins to Loreal (always on 3 for 2 offers in Boots) and to be honest my skin is better.

Doodleydoo · 24/01/2010 20:56

I now ask for my creams/exfoliator/cleanser for xmas and bday presents or some vouchers to use in the shop - people don't ask now as they know this is what I really want and frankly something I use all the time so not a wasted present. But as I have very sensitive skin and flare up at the smallest thing so am a little fussy.

chegirlsgotheartburn · 24/01/2010 21:48

I get mine for Christmas and birthday (July). It last me all year. It works and is the only thing that gets rid of the distressing problem of crusty skin on the side of my nose.

How do I justify the use of expensive Clarins (its mid range really)? I am 42 and have worked since I was 16 and I dont go on holiday so ner!

Chandon · 25/01/2010 07:23

Clarins is made with natural ingredients, Lancome for example is all chemical.

I use Clarins roll on deo, and I smell as nice in te evening as I do in the morning. Somehow it´s just better.

Flightattendant · 25/01/2010 07:51

No no no, your best bet is to be gentle with your face, don;t use makeup if poss, don't smoke and get enough sleep!
And drink enough water etc.

Seriously I can barely believe the popularity of these potions, it is SUCH a massive con!

(imho)

Flightattendant · 25/01/2010 07:54

Ah I see MrsMattie is here, phew!

These companies deal in the placebo effect, it's up to you how much you want to pay for that and tbh we all buy into it in some way or another..but I get resentful that they are probably laughing at us as they rake in another £40 on some nonsense you could make at home.

Cyb · 25/01/2010 08:03

If you like Clarins, buy clarins.

There are sometimes cheaper deals online.

I think us women beat ourselves up trying to buy the 'cheaper' alternative and feel we ahve to justtify our tiny indulgences

emsyj · 25/01/2010 11:31

Using make-up every day tends to leave you looking younger as you get older, for the simple reason that it provides a barrier against the sun, which is the biggest cause of skin ageing. If you want to avoid wrinkles, your best bet is to smother yourself in total sunblock every day (yes, even in the depths of winter) but not many people do that. Using a moisturiser and a foundation on top gives you some sun protection. Make-up isn't bad for your skin, but failing to clean it off properly at the end of each day certainly can be.

Flightattendant · 25/01/2010 13:15

that's interesting Emsy, I retract my anti makeup statement!

However I am of the kind who would do it so badly and look terrible, and then not have time to clean it off before bed...so it would block my pores and make my skin quite bad I think thus necessitating more makeup!

But I would consider the sunblock as long as that was kind of invisible and didn't make my face all yucky.

emsyj · 25/01/2010 14:26

Oooooooh go to MAC and have a lesson! £25 and it's redeemable against any purchase, plus they put all the stuff on a cardboard face with notes on it for you to take away and copy at home.

[want to retrain as a make-up artist but can't afford to emoticon]

I LOVE make-up. Am hopeless with clothes and fashion and quite happy to schlep around in sale items purchased on the interweb, but the FACE: the face must be painted.

wibblydibs · 25/01/2010 15:30

I used to use clarins/chanel/espa all the time - but never quite got it right. Am now using aqueous cream to wash face and diprobase as a moisturiser and my skin has never been better! I also put clinique city block and nice make up over the top everyday. I miss buying clarins etc tbh and would still be doing so if it worked for me. I worry a bit that i should be using an anti aging type thing - but i have 3 DC's under school age so think it would take more than cream to save my skin

marthastewart · 25/01/2010 22:47

Just to let you know that NUXE is part of same company, with the same proportion of natural ingredients, used mainly by French women but becoming more visible here, it's maybe 2/3 price of clairns, same research, labs, ingredients and ethos!
