Good temporary hair dye for covering grey?

I tried "nice and easy" dark blonde this morning and it left the grey. Does anyone have any recommendations?

whats your natural colour?

I didn't think semi-permanent dyes could cover grey and you needed permanent, but am prepared to stand corrected and shamed if anyone knows better...

It depends on how much grey you have, and how that grey is distributed. I have a big chunk of grey at the front, so it doesn't work, my colleague has her grey distributed more evenly, and a semi covers it very well - just looks like she has highlights.

You usually have to leave the colour on for the maximum time to cover grey

I use Garnier Movida in Mahogany on my dark brown slightly peppered(grey!)hair and as long asI leave it on for 30 minutes, it covers well.
I wouldn't have thought the lighter colours would cover grey, though I have never tried it of course.

And I meant to say that it is a semi permanent colour.

My hair is very dark .. not black, but it used to be a rich dark brown with auburn highlights before old age and hair dyes!
But my skin colour is very pale so hairdressers always tell me I should go for dark blond to avoid looking washed out.
So that's what i used this morning and its ok but not good.

I am dark and I ussually go for a mid-light brown dye wise. Saying that I ahve used a medium brown Casting and it looks very dark. it will fade

fishie · 22/01/2010 16:06

daniel field covers grey. and it fades rather than grows out, so you don't get obvious grey roots.

What colour eyes do you have?

If they are blue you might find a semi in a darkish ash brown would be a good tone for you, and provide enough coverage. (If you have blue eyes and pale skin then don't listen to people who say that you need warm blonde tones to 'warm you up', it's tosh!)

If your eyes are brown then a warmer toned (more auburny) mid brown might be okay, but you do have to look out for orange highlights as the dye fades.

I've got very dark hair liberally sprinkled with grey. I do find that very dark brown or black semis cover grey well. The only trouble is that I still get very prominent grey roots, so I'm going to experiment with medium ash brown to see if it blends better.

This site

has lots of in-depth explanation of how hair colouring works and what should suit you.

Lycraphobe · 23/01/2010 18:00

I've got brown eyes and my skin is so white, people used to always ask me if I was ill!
I'll look at the site. Does it have brand suggestions? Or doesn't it matter which one you choose as long as you get the right type and colour?

I don't think it much matters which semi you use, all the mainstream ones seem much of a muchness to me (Movida, Nice & Easy etc).

The main thing is to get a shade which matches your natural colour tone (warm or cool), and to leave it on for the max development time to cover grey (grey hairs are more resistant to dye).

I think in general though it's easier to cover grey with the darker shades of semi, that's what I've found anyway - but you do get obvious white roots if you have a lot of grey so if that's a problem it might be worth experimenting with the more medium shades.

If you're not sure whether your colouring is warm or cool, think what clothes colours suit you.

If you can wear:

  • black, blues, greys, purples and fuschias then go for hair shades in cooler colours (ash brown, ash blonde, platinum blonde, plum / burgundy shades and black)

If you look better in:

  • browns, olive green, creams and oranges then go for warmer shades like auburns, honey, golden blonde etc.

Semi's won't lighten your hair of course (which is okay if you're just covering grey).
