What do I need to tame my fringe?

I had my fringe cut yesterday after spending months growing it out, and then I remembered the reason I grew it out was that I can't get it to sit right. I have a slight wave in my hair and I need some industrial strength 'product' to keep it straight.

I don't have straightners and don't really want to buy them, so I'd welcome any alternatives

Aaah, I'm afraid I was going to say GHDs - they really are a marvel and I do recommend them - sorry

VerityBrulee · 21/01/2010 21:54

Do you think it'll have to be straghtners, ginger? It's just for my fringe, the rest of my hair is fine blowdried.

Is there any point in buying a cheaper alternative to GHDs or are they really worth it?

Straightening balm a big barrel brush and a blowdryer set on low. The when dry a spritz of hairspray works for mine. (big cowlick)

AllThreeWays · 21/01/2010 22:06

And yes GHD's are worth it, but maybe not just for a fringe?

VerityBrulee · 21/01/2010 22:14

Ooo, which straightening balm allthree?

I have Babyliss pro 230 straighteners and I think they are as good as GHDs, but they are a fraction of the price. The only flaw I found is that the off button is in a silly place so you tend to accidentally switch them off the first few times, but it doesn't take long to get used to it. I got mine in Argos. I have similar fringe problems and could never get it to sit right until I got the straighteners. Use straightening spray too to protect your hair from the repeated ironing - Tresemme do a good one.

I use schwartzkopf(sp?) but I am beginning to like tigi products now I can afford them.
Actually the smoothing spray "Spoil me" may help you too.

RamblingRosa · 22/01/2010 08:49

I say it has to be GHDs too I'm afraid. I only really use them for my fringe but they're worth it.

those little ghds...my mum got some and her hair is miles better

VerityBrulee · 22/01/2010 13:08

Well, I put on 'smooth and sleek' mouse, wide barrel brush, hair spray when finished. It looked great when I did it, but now that damn cowslick is appearing again.

Looks like straighteners are the way to go, will have a look at ghds and lolcats babyliss. A bit nervous they will dry out my coloured hair, so I suppose I'll need lots of protective spray! This looking good lark is expensive

TBH if it's just your fringe you're straightening presumably you'll be having it trimmed pretty frequently in any case so shouldn't get too dry (I wouldn't think - no expert!). I ALWAYS use my GHDs on my fringe even if i am doing something different with the rest of my hair, it's the only way to get it to lie properly. Maybe the Babyliss ones mentioned above are worth a try. GHDs I think are generally the most efficient but that matters less just for the fringe area IYSWIM - it only takes 2 seconds to do anyway!

Good luck

Blow dry it, I never GHD my fringe. You need to blow dry it to make it the right shape.

I use this as well.

I use a teeeeny blog when my hair is damp and then blow dry my fringe into shape.

When I first got a fringe cut, my brilliant hairdresser taught me to blow dry it by pulling it down straight over my face, gently tugging it down with my fingers. Then when it's dry (and only then) it can be swept across to be a side fringe (or kept straight if it's a fuller fringe). It'll go cowslick-y if you try to dry it swept across to begin with.

Works for me, and I've got a definite natural cowslick!

Hope that makes some sense!

Have changed name. No idea where that crazy one came from!

VerityBrulee · 22/01/2010 22:32

Every time I look in the mirror I remember why I grew it out in the first place. But...it hides a deep furrow on my forehead and it does suit me, so I'll just have to experment.

maize that tigi gel sounds like strong stuff, I'll have to get my hands on some of that. I'll try the straight down drying technique as I did indeed dry it towards the side today.

I'm a bit reluctant to spend so much on GHDs just for my fringe, but they might just change my life
