Would this coat be warm, do you think?

Does this look like it would be warm?

Why dont you order it and find out?
Cant tell from a picture

maxpower · 20/01/2010 20:52

It's a wool mix so I would think so.

NorkilyChallenged · 20/01/2010 20:59

SixtyFootDoll - yes you're right, that would be sensible. But I'm just pondering and not really good at returning online orders if they don't fit/aren't suitable

Tell me about it, I have 3 parcels in my boot to post.......should go snd buy from SHOPS, I suppose.

Feelingoptimistic · 20/01/2010 21:22

To be honest, I think that type of coat needs to be more than 25% wool. I would not buy it. Given that it's mainly polyester, it's not particularly cheap.

NorkilyChallenged · 20/01/2010 21:31

Feelingoptimistic - that's what I was wondering, what is the optimum wool percentage?

Oh well, maybe you're right (or maybe Maxpower is right?). I just keep dithering and another winter has passed without me getting a decent winter coat. (I'm not freezing to death, I have a cheapo Tesco one that has gone all baggy and isn't all that warm either)

Oooh ooh, what do you think of www.greatplains.co.uk/product/womens+Coats++and++Jackets/J0AO2/Savoy+Empire+Coat.htm (70% wool!!)

OP posts:
NorkilyChallenged · 20/01/2010 21:36

Grr, messed up that link, sorry.

Anyone know about Great Plains sizing? Am sorely tempted to order now as the price is good

NC - I like that GP one, and the fabric is much better quality !! Looks like that one is very good value.
Can't help with sizing - sorry

bunnymother · 20/01/2010 22:34

The GP coats and jackets look great and have excellent fabric composition - mainly wool w a little cashmere, and some nylon for durability.

PoppityPing · 20/01/2010 22:58

I like them both, the GP one actually made me gasp a little and mouth 'oh that's nice' to myself

The firetrap is lovely and quirky though. It doesn't say it's lined either.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 20/01/2010 23:49

Thanks Norkily - just ordered that coat (plus two cardis and a jumper!).
I'd just realised today that last year's Monsoon coat is too big as I've lost about 10lb < preen >, but thought I'd missed the boat for buying a new one this late in the season.
Thanks again.

NorkilyChallenged · 21/01/2010 07:05

Wow, that's a big vote for the GP one isn't it?

OurLady - great, did you get it in black or brown? I'm really unsure as I assumed I need black as I wear black quite often for work, but the brown looks lovely. Can you have a brown coat and wear it with black boots/trousers?

Poppity - neither coat says it's lined actually now that you mention it! Hopefully the woold content in the GP one would mean it was warm though?

NorkilyChallenged · 21/01/2010 08:27

OurLady - could you report back when you receive the coat? Someone has pointed out that the arms on GP stuff can be tight. Also I noticed that it doesn't seem to have pockets, which would be a complete no-no for me.

I would love to hear what it's like in real life when you get it if you have time

OP posts:
OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 21/01/2010 09:29

Yes I will report back - and you can wear black with a brown coat; think of a pair of riding-boots, black with a brown trim.

I'm always banging on about this, but if you have your colours done you'll know for sure what suits you.
Usually it's 'winter' people who can wear black (sort of Celtic colouring, with pale, cool-toned skin and dark eyes).

NorkilyChallenged · 21/01/2010 09:40

Thanks!

Oh I always wonder about colours.

Am ridiculously pale with dark brown hair but light-ish blue/hazel eyes so not sure where I would be classed

OP posts:
OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 21/01/2010 10:07

It's mainly a question of whether your skin has a slightly peachy/yellow tinge to it (which would be warm - autumn or spring) or blue/pink (cool - summer or winter).

At its most basic, silver suits cool tones and gold suits warm.

I'm summer, with pale pinkish skin which doesn't tan easily, light brown hair (well highlighted over the grey) and clear blue eyes.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 25/01/2010 21:53

@ NorkilyChallenged: the coat's going back I'm afraid, as is everything else I ordered.

It's not horrid at all, just a couple of things that would make me uncomfortable wearing it: the collar's a bit bulky and didn't sit well; the skiirt flares out quite a bit but also has inverted pleats which make my bottom half bulkier than I'd like: and the sleeves, which I thought would be a cute feature, looked a bit like they belonged more on a dress.
This is all just a view of how it looked on me - there must be people out there it would suit, and you might be one of them (!)
Hasn't got any pockets though.

NorkilyChallenged · 26/01/2010 01:04

Ah.

Oh well, that saves me buying it. Thanks for letting me know. The pockets issue is a shame but then given what you say about it, maybe it wouldn't suit me either.

Thank you anyway, as I was still looking at it longingly

Back to the drawing board on my coat search.
