Can anyone recommend one that will change my (coloured, straightened and frequently subjected to swim pool chlorine) hay-stack barnet into silky locks?

I'd like to know too. Went to bed with coconut oil all over my hair the other night. By the time I'd washed it out the next day it was no different. I remember trying one of those VO5 hot oil things years ago (do they still make them?) which was quite good. Or google for some other natural alternatives (but not coconut oil obviously )

Redken velvet whip from salons. Not cheap but doesn't go gluey/leave a residue. I warn you though - buy it and you'll be addicted!

Avon do a leave in conditioner. Very cheap and very good. Not too heavy either as my hair can go greasy quickly.

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/01/2010 13:00

I have very fine hair so lots of leave in conditioners make my hair feel weighed down and greasy. I do need all the help I can get though, because hair is bleached to within an inch of its life and blow dried every day.

I did fork out for a Scwarzkopf spray in leave in conditioner from a salon, however stole from dd a spray in leave in conditioner from Boots (almond and coconut, boots own brand) which is great, and at £2 is a lot cheaper than the salon version. It lasts for ages as well.

Also, don't laugh but whenever I go swimming I smear conditioner on my hair before I go in the pool, and put it up. Chlorine kilss my hair (and makes v expensive highlights go green) so if you can avoid getting your hair wet, and if you need to wear a cap, it might stop half the problem with your hair.

I use Aveda Damage Remedy - expensive but I use it weekly and a bottle therefore lasts a really long time (you don't need loads). I've got fine hair so can't overdo conditioner, but weekly instead of my usual conditioner I use Damage Remedy and comb it through carefully. I only leave it a few mins, but have tried it left overnight - it's too much for my hair, but can be used like that.

Also I read that if you don't rinse conditioner out completely it leaves a shine.

aha, thankyou oh beautifully coiffured ones!

I will investigate all products mentioned (esp. cheaper Boots ones and 99p sachets!). Interesting tip about smothering hair in conditioner. Might try that next time I go swimming.

Problem with caps is that everyone I see who wears one, belts up and down the lanes like an olympic wannabee. Although I swim often, I'd certainly not live up to that image.

I would like to add my vote for that Boots pump spray. My hair is fine but the conditioner is really light so doesn't weigh the hair down. And it smells nice too.

I also like the Aussie leave in conditioning detangling spray but it's a bit dearer at £5ish. Lasts ages though (or maybe I don't wash my hair enough!)

thelunar66 · 20/01/2010 13:26

Don't smother your hair with conditioner before swimming... you'll have an oil slick around you in the water!

I agree with Bucharest about the Charles Worthington yellow bottle one.

GetOrfMoiLand · 20/01/2010 16:54

I don;t leave an oil slick around me - mind you I swim like a 78 year old lady (head up out of the water looking around) so don't actually get my hair wet.

If you are someone who can actually swim properly and gets your hair wet I would actually wear a cap!

GeneHuntsMistress · 20/01/2010 17:48

for an everyday leave-in conditioner, i can highly recommend the Aussie Miracle thingy in the spray bottle. Lasts for ages and ages and is really light, any other i have used in the past is too heavy for my hair.

Also Aussie stuff currently on offer in Boots at mo.

At the weekend, I tried an umberto gianni (sp?) overnight hair balm. While it didn't make me look (or feel...) alluring at the time, my hair looked brilliant the next day. Really soft and shiny (it usually looks like a haystack) and still looks pretty ok today. I got it from our local Boots and think it cost about £5
