Benefit Makeup

I so desperately want to like benefit, it's packaging is so pretty ... but, it does nothing for me. I tried this at the weekend but it made no difference to my cheeks at all - the poor makeup girl kept slapping it on but nothing.

I also tried high beam and moon beam recently with the same effect - nothing at all really, the slightest smidge of a shimmer.

Is it just me? am I doing it wrong or are they just not very good?

I am pale and I am 41. After years of trying different brands I am happy with the look benefit gives me.

They are stingy with the samples though.

vjg13 · 18/01/2010 19:27

I really like it but agree it is a bit expensive. I have the smoky eye palate and another one and both are good. Like the dandelion powder, the eye bright pencil and the primer is good too.

stressheaderic · 18/01/2010 19:29

Benefit devotee here too, although I agree it is definitely hit n miss...

Was not impressed at all with the Bad Gal mascara, brush was too fat and it seems to flake as day goes on. Liked That Gal primer as it felt cool on, but don't think it made blind bit of difference.

LOVE Dandelion though, it's just a lovely healthy colour, and LemonAid is ace too, brightens your eyes, just right for this time of year. I had something called Jewels once, you painted it on your cheeks, I liked that.

Cranreuch · 18/01/2010 19:38

Not a huge fan, have used this and bought a boing! because I think it does a good job.

BendyBob · 18/01/2010 19:41

OP wondered exactly this about Benefit a while ago. I wanted to like it. Anyway I ended up buying Erase paste and powderflage. It lasts ages. It's ok..not sure I'd buy it again though.

The powderflage pot is crazy. A ball shaped pot?! It's nearly pinged out from my fingers so many times ready to explode everywhere.

I do wonder whether the packaging - is it aimed at the inner little girl playing with mummy's make-up? - impenetrabel product names and matey descriptions are covering up the fact that it's actually nothing special?

janeite · 18/01/2010 19:42

I like Dandelion but not enough to pay for it. I think it is hideously over-priced.

Undercovamutha · 18/01/2010 19:51

LOVE Benefit.
Benetint is much better than Posietint IMO.

Also love this

Have plenty of the eye shadows (from when I was working and actually had money!), and they are great, and the body scrubs are good as well.

Only thing I have been disappointed with is the 'realness of concealness'.

MillyR · 18/01/2010 19:52

Maybe (judging from this thread) what Benefit are good at is adding colour but in a pink sort of way, which is good for pale skin. A lot of brands add colour through bronzers, which looks all wrong on pale skin. If you don't like bronzer or conventional blusher, then Benefit has alternatives.

Horton · 18/01/2010 20:20

That's probably right, Milly, but what I like about them is that they have lots of non-pink alternatives for yellow people like me. I find a lot of stuff, even bronzers, way too pink for me. Hoola is the only thing I've found that doesn't look like make up, IYSWIM. It just gives me a sort of healthy glow.

Mammina · 18/01/2010 20:44

got powderflage as a present last year and it's useless, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference (maybe I am beyond help though..)

Sandy22 · 18/01/2010 20:45

I use hoola, dallas, lemonaid, dandelion, dear john moisturiser and the foundation. I buy it all from e-bay which is far cheaper.

JaMmRocks · 18/01/2010 20:50

I have rather a lot of Benefit stuff, a lot of it's great, but some is utterly pointless. I do like Posie tint and Benetint though. Don't like Bad Gal mascara, it felt really dry and made my lashes come out

Boi-ing concealer really good on my under eye shadow problem

AuntieMaggie · 19/01/2010 11:51

Agree the mascara is pants.

Not sure how shimmery you want to be using the highbeam and moonbeam its supposed to catch the light and I've got friends who haven't got my fair skin and they love it too.

It's difficult to see the effects of some of this stuff under the store lighting though - I had my make up done recently and it wasn't until I was in day light I could see it properly.

I also love the other eye set they do - can't remember the name but the peachy/browny eyeshadow makes my green eyes pop and it has some of the concealer too which is handy.

Also though it is pricey the stuff lasts for ages.

Chandon · 19/01/2010 12:10

LOVE

. Big Beuatiful eyes kit (does what it says on the box, contains EXCELLENT concealer)}
. The Brow kit (for light brows, a powder for colouring in and a wx to set the shape)
. Mascara (does wonderes for my tiny lashes
. Waterproof Kohl Pencil (syas on all day, even if you sweat or cry (not that I ever do either...).

SO-SO
. Benetint (bit like smudging beetroot juice into my cheeks). mainly leaves me with very pink fingers.
. Yellow powder, not sure what to do with it (Lemon Aid)
. Primer (is good, but never use it really)
. Dandelion (my skin is too yellow for it to have any effect. Good for Pale English Skin though)

HTH

I love benefit but its getting too expensive now to keep buying so ive found some substitutes,my fav is hoola ive sworn by it for years but now found a replacement half the price and just as good if not better :-)

deliciousdevilwoman · 19/01/2010 15:06

I use Dr Feelgood, Moonbeam, Coralista blusher and their perfume called B Spot

Horton · 19/01/2010 20:24

What's your Hoola replacement, clarebear? I would love to know as I'm getting to the end of my box of Hoola and I can't live without it.

clarebear1 · 20/01/2010 20:43

Its makebelieve fake tan brand from boots (its in the fake tan section) it is a matt powder tho, £12.50 i think it is! i think its great!

Horton · 21/01/2010 10:44

Thanks! I will check it out.

Bodenbabe · 21/01/2010 13:40

I am addicted to High Beam and MoonBeam. It doesn't add colour, it just adds a shimmer - ar you looking at it front-on, because you might not notice it then. But put the light on and look at it sideways and it is very noticeable. So much so that if you put on too much it looks ridiculous. I've seen my mum put it on and it looks fine when I look straight at her but from an angle she looks almost fluorescent!

aha! I was looking straight on (and under shop lights).

When I asked dp "what does my face look like" he replied (looking like startled rabbit) "er, rounder?" . Like, when is that ever going to be a good thing to say? Hilarious boy!

but still not convinced

Want to love Benefit, but usually find I love the packaging more than the product. Dandelion doesn't do much for me and I have skin so pale it's virtually see through. One exception, though, is their cream eyeshadows - they really do last, and come in quite big pots.
