Following on from the timeless classics thread - what do we think of Missoni?

I don't really "get " Missoni - I feel I ought to but I just can't. Is it a classic or is it just old lady knits?

They do make some pretty spectacular evening dresses but I'm thinking more of the zigzag knitted stuff that is their core look:

like this

or this one

There's been a missoni sale running on outnet this week and I was musing over this coat - but I can't decide if it is a glorified peruvian horse blanket - or an "investment piece"

I think part of the problem is I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone wear it irl - would you wear the knitted stuff/have you ever sen it worn well?

Not my cup of tea.

hellsbelles · 15/01/2010 20:00

I sort of agree with you - and IMO the coat is more on the horse blanket side

However my friend has a missoni coat she got in a sale a couple of years ago - I never would have picked it up and tried it on (on the hanger looks crapola) - but she looks totally gorgeous every time she wears it and I'm very of it.

badgermonkey · 15/01/2010 20:02

I don't like it in the photos at all - keep seeing it on the Outnet too and trying to like it! Maybe you do just have to see it on.

jules2906 · 15/01/2010 20:09

Hmm, find I just can't wear patterns (finally admitting it - perhaps that will save me some wasted moeny! ) so I wouldn't go there. Coat is kind of interesting. Would probably look at it on someone else and feel envious but if I bought it myself it would never see the light of day....

eshermummy · 15/01/2010 20:12

hellsbells - what's your friend's coat like? Is it like the things I've linked to - i.e. distinctively Missoni or is it just a lovely coat that happens to be Missoni?

I was wondering about a striped scarf like this.
Badgermonkey - I am trying to like it too

I think the way Missoni uses colour is AMAZING, really brilliant. Do I like the clothes? No.

I like Missoni scarfs and some of their orange label stuff is very nice indeed but I think it's like anything just sift through and buy it if you love it.
I think that coat is grim...sorry but there are better things out there imo
I don't buy into the idea of investment pieces...just buy what you absolutely love and wear to death!

blithedance · 15/01/2010 20:25

I really love the colours. Am proud owner of a Missoni blanket, but it looks better on the sofa than it would on me!

also need some new glasses and am tempted by their range for Specsavers, does that count or too downmarket?

LetThemEatCake · 15/01/2010 20:25

I don't like it, but then, I tend not to like things that are immediately recognisable as a certain designer (hence my dislike of Orla Kiely, for eg)

A friend of mine has a Missoni dress and I think she looks pretty ordinary in it ... sorry, friend

The coat - if I found it in a charity shop, regardless of label, I'd probably pounce on basis of 'quirky', 'interesting' etc. But I think there are better things on t'Outnet, tbh.

duffpancake · 15/01/2010 20:26

I never really got the Missoni thing but then I saw this picture of Jennifer Lopez which for some reason made me imagine that if I had that outfit I would look exactly like that.

carciofi · 15/01/2010 20:49

I love Missoni scarves and have a couple. I'm not too keen on the clothes though.

hellsbelles · 15/01/2010 21:30

esher - you can tell it's missoni because it's zig zag patterns but for some reason it's just right - it's a cream coat with turquoise and yellow (I think) I know i"m not doing it justice but it really is lovely

Feelingoptimistic · 15/01/2010 21:34

I got a lovely Missoni jumper in a charity shop today (perfect condition for £5.99 !!!) and I am very happy with it, but I would not have paid a normal price - it's too obvious, a bit like LV bags...

ColdBunny · 15/01/2010 22:12

I generally like colorful clothes, but somehow, I don't get Missoni. Something inside me wants to like it, and I keep on been drawn to that area within Harvey Nichols during the sales. However, every time I try on a Missoni piece, it goes back to the shelf. Scarves are ok, but anything bigger than that is an overkill. Good job as well, given the price tag.

I love the missoni twin set you linked to BUT, and this is a big but, unless you are pretty funky looking this look could go badly wrong. I'd team with a denim mini and fierce looking boots (mols probably). Put with the wrong thing though (e.g. think Boden long, swishy, cord, brown skirt) you could look like someone's fucking grandma.

Romanarama · 16/01/2010 16:46

I love it, apart from the price tag. Also Pucci. If I was a millionaire I would wear only Pucci dresses, they're so cool

piprabbit · 16/01/2010 16:52

I think there are reasons why items get heavily discounted.... it probably means that nobody likes it very much and that it won't become a classic.

TheRomanceOfItAll · 16/01/2010 17:40

Fair point, Pip.
