Anyone feel like educating me in the art of 'layering' please

I'm hopeless at it! I end up with a cardigan with a long sleeved t-shirt on top, a scarf of some sort but it never looks as it does in pictures! If anyone has time, please would you give me some tips and point me towards layers which would look good together. Colour-wise ... greys, beiges, pinks, purples ... mostly thinking to wear with denim and either black or brown boots. TIA

step one, very thin high neck long sleeved t shirt. step 2, layer a vest top on top of it. step 3 layer a thin long cardy on top. step 4, add scarf if required.

i also layer summer dresses with long sleeve t shirts, cardis and jeggings.

is a very good way of using all the clothes in your wardrobe. am currently getting a lot of wear out of a little black dress that i probably wouldn't wear much by putting a white long sleeved t shirt underneath and a cardi on top. looks much more casual.

keep the layers thin and not too much on the shoulders to avoid looking bulky

l like to have all the layers on show so don't bother with trying to match up the necklines.

very good for when it's cold outside but warm inside.

enjoy

on a serious note, going with minko's ideas, i often wear a long sleeved skinny rib polo neck, under a short sleeved dress/tunic, cardi over the top, scarf, leggings, tights or even skinny jeans on lower half if tunic is on the short side, then either knee length or mid calf length boots.

Second the advice that the layers have to be v.v.v.thin - Jigsaw do beautiful thin knits ideal for the purpose, as do Whistles - or risk looking a bit chunky!

Thanks for all the ideas. I had a quick look around the shops today and saw a nice navy (boring, I know) cardigan in Gap which would probably be nice with a white scoop neck (or maybe a brighter colour?) and a scarf; and also a lovely scarf in Jigsaw (not to match but would be gorgeous with grey waterfall cardy which I do have but .... I couldn't be bothered trying on, didn't buy and neither the Gap cardy or the Jigsaw scarf is on their respective websites so I can't order on-line (Jigsaw) or phone the store giving accurate description (Gap) and am now KICKING myself. Grrrrr.

Still, maybe I'll ring Gap tomorrow and describe it's location and they might post it out.
