Doing my own blonde highlights

TreeTrunkThighs · 14/01/2010 21:09

I have had my highlights, foils, done at the hairdresser for years. I am sick of paying so much so am thinking of doing my own.

Can anyone recommend any products or methods or just give me some tips? I had a full head of foils done at the end of November so due to go for a half head pretty soon.

Thanks!

My tip is don't! I tried this and it was a total disaster - had to go to the hairdressers to get it salvaged. I have now found a local hairdresser that does it for half the price of the salon I used to go to, and they don't insist on doing a blow dry at the end so that's another £20 saved. If yours is only a little grown out it shouldn't be too hard to match the colours. Otherwise, ask a friend to do it for you with a home kit.

Oh God, one thing I do not recommend is DIY w blonde highlights. As suggested, try and find somewhere cheaper or cut back elsewhere. Home
blonde dye job is grim.

I do my own! I have very blond hair anyway so I just have to put in a bit at the front. I like it much better than the way salons have done it - looks much more natural. So I'd definitely recommend home kits to fellow blondies who aren't looking for a full head affair. I use the garnier kit (I think - it's green anyway!), you just brush the highlighter in - no foils or caps or anything, easy peasy.

But I guess if you are after something more comprehensive, or the contrast between what you're putting in and your base colour is quite significant (so would show up mistakes!), then perhaps a professional job is worth it?

I also think don't do it.

Shop around for the cheapest salon highlights and say no to the blowdry (which are often crap in salons these days anyway)

KEEP AWAY FROM THE HAIR DYE.

I tried to do this (those hair dyes which you dye your whole head, and then you have got another dye which you put on top for highlights).

It went ORANGE. really bright, troll coloured orange.

4 bottles of hair dye latr in a desperate attempt to change the bloody colout to ash blonde it was still orange. Then I had to go to work. They all called me Geri Halliwell etc.

Went to the hairdresser, took them ages to rectify it. They put die on then had to put 4 lots of purple toner on top to get brassiness out. It cost me a fortune. My hair is also now straw like and in vile condition.

same here. when i was younger i went through a stage of having different coloured hair. i went red for a bit, then when i thought that had grown out (couldn't see it anymore) i went for the blonde highlights. they went pink

Thank you.

Will heed your warnings and carry on forking out for the hairdresser!
