How many of you wear dresses and skirts for every day more than jeans?

I'm so bad at just throwing on a pair of jeans and then working my outfit round that. Wish I would wear dresses and skirts more. I do in the summer but then in the winter I just feel really overdressed for toddler group or music classes with my DD when many mums have tops with dried yoghurt on from breakfast!

Just wondered what you all wear for a normal day if you stay at home.

I'm a dress lover partic in winter. Have loads of merino wool dresses or tunics that go over thick tights, leggings or skinny jeans (depending on length of dress). Fave dresses are from Toast & Uniqlo. I'm partly wearing dresses at lot as a reaction to living existing in maternity and big jeans for so long while I was PG/ BF. I like that it keeps my derriere warm too.

i am def a dress/skirt person. i hate how jeans feel on and prefer the freedom of movement in skirts.
in the summer, i wear lightweight skirts with vest/t-shirt and flip flops or nice sandals and in the winter heavier weight skirts with long sleeve tops/jumpers, tights and boots/shoes.
i do have a few dresses but i prefer skirts. i'm just beginning to make my first skirt for myself, i have made countless items for dd, but never anythign for myself, so armed with the instructions for a wrap skirt from sew hip magazine i am off to make myself a cord wrap skirt with pretty liberty style print lining and edging.

Also a non jeans (or trousers) owner. Have always hated them from size 12 to 16 and back again. I just look awful in them. Love dresses, so easy and effortless and they can be dressed up or down without much thought. I am an accessories queen.

oops forgot to say, i buy most of my clothing from m&s, next, boden and monsoon.

SnowMuchToBits · 11/01/2010 19:08

Nowtheres4, I buy most of my stuff from those shops too, except maybe a bit less from Next these days, and also buy some plain tops from Kettlewell (online).

dresses are just so much easier not to mention more comfortable in my opinion.

winter it is knitted dresses with woolly tights at fly london boots for everyday, or coloured opaques and peep toes for tarting up purposes.

summer = birkenstocks for day or peeps for dressier.

work = shift dresses, with shirts or polo necks underneath & coloured opaques in winter.

easy peasy and dont have to worry about what goes with what. also gives opportunity for me to play with lots of gorge costume jewellery to accessorise.

really pleased that this season the knitted dress has been "in" as i have managed to stock up - can't have anything too clingy on tummy so have add judiciously to my stash every winter. ths year from Phase Eight, H&M, Boden wrap, ASDA George. Lovely ones in new look but too arse skimming - all needed jeggings which defeats the whole comfort purpose for me.

oooh dont i bang on once i start, soz

Ever since the snow I've been in thick trousers as my dresses and skirts do not suit my walking boots, but I can't bring myself to wear only jeans so I've been wearing cords and woolen trousers that match the shoes. As soon as the snow around me has melted I shall be in high heels and dresses!
I'm leaning more and more towards Hobbs with my clothing purchases especially as a lot of their sale items are 70% off at the moment. I know it's supposed to be frumpy, but in the last year or so it's got better and better.

Hulababy · 12/01/2010 19:03

Buy an awful lot of my dresses, skirts and tops from White Stuff, FatFace and Monsoon.

Spidermama · 12/01/2010 19:07

I only wear dresses now. I would only wear trousers camping or on country walks.

WeWantYourDoofDoofs · 12/01/2010 19:16

I'm making a concerted effort to wear dresses more, I like Joe Browns ons with thick tights or leggings underneath. It's all too easy to get into that jeans and a jumper rut isn't it?

I feel smarter yet it's actually less hassle than trying to co-ordinate a whole outfit I have found.

Easier for packing too as we go away often, can get away with a smaller case

I rarely wear dresses/skirts esp in winter. I never have really, was a tomboy as a child and could only be forced into one on Christmas Day! I wear skirts a bit in the summer but in the winter I always have a dilemma about what shoes/boots to wear and I find that skirts ride up in an annoying way if you have tights underneath...

Dresses tend not to suit my shape, or I should say that the ones that do, I don't like that style or it's not suitable for everyday wear (wore a prom-style dress to an event last year, very fitted to waist and then a wide skirt, got lots of compliments but can't imagine when i'll get to wear it again). I prefer shift-type dresses but to get them to fit at the hips they look shapeless elsewhere...

I struggle at whatever size I am (currently too big) to find jeans that I like, that feel good and that do an adequate masking/emphasising job of wobbly and good bits. Whatever size I am I always look better in a skirt or even better, a dress.

I mostly wear dresses to work - shift with opaques, cardie and heels in the winter - looks smarter than trousers (on me anyway). Don't even need to think about it when I wear a dress - on goes dress, on go tights, done - whereas if I am trying to put on a trouser suit one or other bit has probably got toddler goo, and then I need the top that "goes" etc. Too much hassle.

vesela · 12/01/2010 21:14

I've hardly worn trousers since sometime in November - before that I wore jeans nearly every day. They suit me fine, but I suddenly got fed up of wearing jeans and black/grey/white tops, day out (I work at home). Plus it got very cold.

I got some thick tights and leggings and some fantastic boots that made it easy to wear dresses/skirts every day - plus a couple of new skirts - and am a lot happier and warmer and have fewer laundry crises.

I'm not keen on shoes with skirts/tights though, since I'm a 14 on top but have thin stick-like calves. So what do I do in summer - just go straight from boots into bare legs? (I wear skirts and bare legs most of the summer). I know people were wearing boots last summer, but I still can't get used to the idea.

I love dresses, I am very lazy so view a jersey dress and leggings as my staple. No need to worry what goes with what and no wastband digging in. Just wearing this outfit makes me feel like I am wearing pjamas and nightie yet look decent.
