Question re Links of London

asking for a friend....

She was given a bracelet at Christmas and was a bit when she looked on their website (being nosy) and saw how much they cost - a lot more than the giver would normally spend on her iyswim. So she is now wondering if the one she was given is a (cough) "genuine imitation" or if it is possible that you can get them cheaper sometimes (the giver has also got herself one)?

Anyone know how you could tell if it was the real thing or not?

My friend got a fake one from the internet (not sure which site)

It is almost impossible to tell the difference between it and a real one (we compared it to a real one)

ChilloSTOPFOLLOWINGMEhippi · 11/01/2010 12:23

did it come with the box ?

DecorHate · 11/01/2010 12:26

Came in a little bag in a box. Looks ok to me (but have never been close to a real one!) though one of the charms (handbag) looks badly made.

It is a bit tight on my friend and she is worrying that if it broke and she took it in to get fixed it would be v. embarrassing if a fake...

Only semi-relevant (and doesn't help!) but dh and I were quite at the Links prices compared the the poor quality...so it could be real.

IndigoSky · 11/01/2010 12:34

It's probably a fake. I have the sweetie bracelet and the charms that I have are well made. As others have said, there are loads of fakes/copies out there. I would be surprised if the bracelet is tight if it's real, unless your mate has seriously chunky wrists - the bracelets have a lot of give.

DecorHate · 11/01/2010 12:36

She has quite large wrists - it's not hurting but leaves a slight mark. It may be that she has been bought the medium rather than the large size too...

The real boxes are sort of a yellow colour and come with a ribbon around them.

DecorHate · 11/01/2010 13:22

The box looks like the ones on their website. Friend can't remember about a ribbon (opened it on Christmas morning with everything else). She thinks it might have been in a bag with Links on it but has probably thrown it out

I have the Signature bracelet. Looking now, the charms all have the Links logo printed on the loop that attaches them to the bracelet, if that helps? They do come in fancy Links bags so that sounds right.

I did meet someone with a sweetie bracelet that I thought was fake - the colour of the heart on hers was a pink different to any I've seen on the website or IRL. She got it on Ebay.

There are lots of places that stock them now, including independent jewellers. Maybe your friend should just pop in somewhere, explain the situation and ask what they think of it. I wouldn't be embarassed to do that.

Mimi1977 · 11/01/2010 14:32

Loads of fakes now. I have one and a shop girl loved that I had paid lots for mine and she had got hers for dead cheap (didn't want to tell her that some people hate fake things and I felt she'd been the one who had been done.) BUT i would say I couldn't really tell the difference. If that was me I wouldn't think twice about taking it in to a store and asking them as they'll be able to tell. Sorry but would devalue it for me if I knew it was a fake.

Cloakofdarkness · 11/01/2010 18:43

I have one of these and each charm has it's own box when you buy them - so if it came in one box it's probabably fake. Bear in mind too that the charms cost £40-£45 each and the bracelet £110 for the silver on it's own. It would be a very generous gift giver who would give the bracelet and several charms at once.

pagwatch · 11/01/2010 18:47

yes. and there is a charge to havethe charms soldered on which is an additional £30 from memory - althoughthe charge is for up to three charms. I have three waiting. I won't get them put on until I havethree
I am not paying £30 to put on a charm thatthe children have paid £40 plus for.

The good news aboutthereal ones is thatthey look faband last. Mine is about 8 years old and all the charms are intact and it still looks fab.

Why doesn't your friend take it in to a branch and just tell the story. It isn't embaressing for her is it?

rosieroseanna · 11/01/2010 18:50

I have loads of Links of London jewellery and it is well made. There are loads of fakes around but it is possible that it was bought from Bicester where they have an outlet store which is way cheaper!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 11/01/2010 18:54

I bought a fake by accident and it is amazingly super

hurrah

a kind of cuff made of what looks like safety pins

pagwatch · 11/01/2010 19:04

ooh BALD. I havethat too.
Ds2 and DD like to nick it from me and twang it.

( can you spot DH was at idea exhaustion after 20 years of gift buying and Links opened locally...)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 11/01/2010 19:06

It's fab, innit, pag?

I feel all edgy and stuff when I wear it

[deluded]

pagwatch · 11/01/2010 19:08

[deluded clique]

fabhead · 11/01/2010 20:39

i've got a genuine one the DP bought in the broadgate shop for the normal price (saw receipt and online banking payment), he bought it with 3 charms, they put them on in the shop - not soldered but with silver loop things and it all came in one ribbon-wrapped box in a Links bag? Is mine an elabourate fake then? (I did think the silver cheapo hoop things to put the charms on were a bit odd or are they just the default ones and then you pay more for soldering?)

fabhead · 11/01/2010 20:40

oh and mine is a bit tight - it's a medium and I have tiny wrists.
