moisturiser like creme de la mere but cheaper!

Is there such a thing? I'm desperate for a decent moisturiser. I tried a sample of creme de la mere and it was good, but way too expensive. Is there anything as good but without the price tag?

When I had mega-dry skin during a really cold snap, the only thing that worked was Dermalogica barrier Repair.

I used it first, as a thin layer

and then a heavy-duty moisturiser on top. I loved this one, but any one would prob do.

Without this duo, I was in danger of being mistaken for a lizard who was in the process of shedding his skin.

According to Make-Up Alley, it's the German made Nivea rather than the US one, which is most similar to Creme De La Mer - less preservatives and additives or something. I can vouch for the German one that it's great and ridiculously cheap!

Right then, i took me down to Aldi today -they let me in even though i look like a snake - and I bought me the day and night aldi-la siana cream. So, i'll try it and see if it does the wonders it's meant too. I'll report back!

I'd love to try the Dr Nick Lowe one, but i've got such little faith at the moment... i'm loath to spend the cash just to stare at a lizard in the mirror again. sigh.

I even got so desperate i slapped on olive oil this morning. I should do the oil moisture thing again actually, that was quite good, but it takes too much time, so i stopped doing it.

I'll send you a tub of the German Nivea to try if you like. It only costs about two euro a tin so you can have it on me!

i bought nivea yesterday and put it on last night. I have very dry skin and it really does do a good job. I have always used olay but it is really much thicker and more effective at the dry bits....thank you

Aw, Scootergrrrl, you are lovely. Thanks for the offer, but I went and bought a small tin of the UK one today. It's not the german one, but i figured which ever one i eventually settle on, it will have to be easy to buy. You never know, you might make a mint on distributing to the UK! Looks like there might be a need!

My skin does feel and look better today, after using the aldi one, but i'll see what it's like in a week or so, as it's often after a couple of days i get the signs of it not being compatible. I don't want to use the nivea yet, until i see what the aldi one does on it's own. Look at me going all scientific... well, sort off.

Now there's a business idea...

The Nivea (UK or German, I expect) is particularly good if you slather it all over in a thick layer then have a nice hot bath. It all soaks in and you get all nice and glowy/shiny. I hope you're impressed with my catchy turn of phrase. Perhaps I should look for an alternative career as a beauty journo ?

Dr Hauschka Rose day-cream. I love it.

sh77 · 12/01/2010 12:52

If going for Dr Hauschka, the light day cream is better than the the normal one I think. The normal one os very rich and quite oily. I have eczema and it irritated it. Good to see all the support for Nivea - thanks for the German tip. Will get hubby to buy me a tin.

My best dry skin trick is to wash my face with aquiaus cream, rub it onto wet skin like a face wash, rinse then rub face dry with an old/roughish face cloth.

It only costs about £1 for a v. big pot and my skin is glowing, smooth and I've saved a bomb!
