Lemuria egg cocoon dress- cheaper alternative anyone?

I love this dress, it was on Plumo in the sale for over £200 though (gone now).

I know it can be several different outfits blahdy blah, but I just can't justify that cost.

So, anyone have one? Anyone know a good alternative.

I have seen lots that don't have sleeves, but I love the sleeves, and the shape with it coming in at the bottom

this or this any good?

HinnyPet · 08/01/2010 17:34

Can't you make one? Can't be that hard. Isn't it just 2 jersey fitted sheets, press studs?

Poppity · 08/01/2010 17:56

Tethersend, I like both of those especially the second (can't wear wool though), but wanted an adaptable one really.

HinnyPet, I have wondered about that, know of a pattern? I can only find one without sleeves.

I don't know of a pattern, but I should imagine it is circular and a smaller circle is attached inside it, the two pulled up like conical? (if you know what I mean)
It needs to be big enough to wrap round.... perhaps three jersey sheets?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 19:07

ooh that's very clever

I'd say homemade won't do it - it must be tricky sewing or it wouldn't hang so well.

Poppity · 08/01/2010 19:53

that is what I wondered Devil. It does hang very well.

The other problem is that you need a machine that can cope with stretchy fabric. Mine is from the 50's, the fanciest thing on it is the zip foot.

I know I could sew it all stretched out, but I've never had very good results from that.

It must have seams down each side and under the arms at the minimum?

I can't picture the circles Hinny? I thought it was a column which extends at the op eachside into sleeves/ties, with a split to put your head through?

I don't know, would love one though, I'll keep looking on fleabay I guess

make your own is possible, beyond me.

I love the look of the dress, though there are only a few versions of it that would suit me, it looks very comfortable.. is the infinity dress similar?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 21:22

Oh I love crafster but that isn't the same at all is it?

I think with a dress like this buy it or don't themss the breaks

Poppity · 08/01/2010 22:13

I don't think the infinity dress has sleeves, you can tie the top pieces lots of different ways, but they are just stitched on the top of a 'skirt' piece iyswim. Much simpler to make, and not much pattern working out to do either.

I love the sleeves though, and the whole shape of the cocoon dress.

Not sure I or my machine are up to it. Thanks for the link though, inspired find!

Devil, I don't think they have used a slinky enough fabric? It might work better then......

It is something like 98% cotton/2% elastane, or 96%cotton and 4% elastane... it can't be heavy? but must surely be stretchy?

It is like a work of art the dress you linked to, imho.

Never heard of this dress before this thread! Have now been furiously googling for patterns but to no avail. Apparently there is a craze and a pattern for this dress sweeping around Iceland. Would love to make it, though fear that even if I could I'm not skinny enough for it!
