Hi, I used to work in labs so it involved a lot of hand cleaning. I tried tons of creams the only one which left my hand nice and soft is Neutrogena, all kind is good but I haven't try their antiaging one yet (I am 40 and still have better hands than some 25 I worked with). Usually twice a day is enough but if you feel dry you can use it more. Also it is cheap enough and you can find it anywhere.
Also in case of very dry/damaged hands, as a punctual quick fix, use Elisabeth Arden 8 hours cream skin protectant (very expensive but a small tube last about one or 2 year). You can use it for lips hands, feet, small burns, sore nipple..... massage your hands and nails before going to bed with a small dab, and after a few days miracles happen. Don't use their hand cream though, expensive and rubbish.
hope that helps

Palmers cocoa butter is great though quite heavy. I put it on at night and use Dove or Nuetrogena during the day. It's cheap, available in Wilkinsons and Boots.

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector is fab - very rich, and has pretty much stopped my hands getting those really painful split fingers.

I've had really dry hands all winter and I have just bought Neutrogena norwegian formula hand cream and it's great. They are not fixed yet, but feel so much better. it was pretty cheap.

JackieNo - I love what the hemp cream does for my hands but I loathe the smell - do you know if they do something similar with a different smell?

Aqeuous cream (you can get it in Boots for e.g., I think it's usually aimed at kids' rashes and excema etc) has worked well for me when my hands have been really raw and cracked. Not at all glamorous but v cheap compared with pretty much everything else.

Body shop hemp one is the best imo
I have tried loads -clarins,l'occitane,neutrogena etc

It really makes a difference that doesn't just wear off in 5 minutes.

You can also get the cotton gloves that you put on at night after you've put on a lot of hand cream.
Also in the summer make sure you use a handcream with an spf in it or just your normal suncream.

Soap and Glory hand cream is quite nice too, but second Neutrogena for really chapped hands.
Also, good old Atrixo.

JackieNo · 07/01/2010 10:26

Aquavit, don't know of one that smells nicer - I have to say, I don't mind the smell now, and it doesn't seem to last.

I have very dry skin that can get irritated and chapped in winter. I recently invested in a paraffin wax bath (c. £40 from Argos) after getting great results from a paraffin wax salon manicure.

My mum is a nurse and told me these are used in the hospital to soothe arthritis and dry skin.

The heater takes ages to melt the wax (c. 4 hours) but I keep it on the whole time and do a treatment every 2nd night.

Sounds high maintenance but my hands are totally different - massive improvement to look at but also feel so much more comfortable.

Flexitol heel balm spread on hands then go to bed (very greasy but amazing!)

Big thumbs up to the sunscreen on the back of hands - it's an area easy to forget; but one look at the hands of many Aussie ladies of my vintage made me an instant convert.
