Hi...

I would like to try and whiten my teeth but I cant afford the £500 my dentist charges,

Can any one reccommend a product to use at home - like the stuff you wear at night in a gum sheild?

Another vote for do not ever, under any circumstances go for the laser one. It is the most painful thing ever. Far worse than childbirth. However, I am proud that I lasted the entire session my neighbour quit after ten minutes.
Good luck with the strips!

geordieminx i think you are really quite beautiful .

i went to a local beauty salon, they took moulds of my teeth, made custom made gum shield thingys and i bought the gel - enough to last at least a year for the princely sum of £99.

and it worked a treat!

ring round beauty salons that do a bit of botox and that kind of thing - they usually do teeth whitening aswell.

I would not advise that anyone has this treatment at a beauty salon.

In most cases you will be fine BUT there are times when maybe you need dental advice- the dentist will tell you if your teeth will take the bleach, if you have gum problems, and what to do if you get sensitivity.

You are not going to get any back-up if things go wrong from a salon.

I paid a lot at the dentists- I had 3 apppts in total- before, during and after using the bleach. She advised me about sensitivity etc. The moulds they use cost at least £100- to have the impressions done. I don't see how any beauty therapist is qualified to take impressions using plaster! The gum trays are then made based on the moulds.

I can see that if you a re short of cash youm ight want to cut corners, but tbh I'd rather not bother at all than risk having problems.

this wasnt a "normal" salon i went to but one that did a bit of botox and slightly more cosmetic enhancements than a salon that just does facials etc. she was well qualified - it was on offer and should have been ££££s - it was a while ago - the kit had everything in it and she did warn me about sensitivity etc first and gave me info to read up. it was a reputable place, just alot cheaper than a dentist, the moulds were excellent,(not plaster but whatever the dentist uses) made to measure and very good quality silicone.
it took about 3 weeks to get them back with the kit. all above board and ship shape i have to say. and did i mention cheaper than a dentist? oh yes i think i did. doesnt mean it wasnt kosher though!

How did they make the moulds? The dentist fills your mouth with quick setting cement type stuff then removes it before it's too hard! I wouldn't like anyone untrained to use that! Having impressions done is not great as you can feel you are going to choke on the stuff.

Maybe what you mean is that she used pre-made gum shields - platic- that are then warmed and moulded toyour teeth?

ThatVikRinA22 · 02/02/2010 19:16

no, she took impressions and sent them away to have custom made shields made up. im sure she was trained. it was fine. they are brilliant and do the job just fine as they are "made to measure" from the impressions she took.

it cost me £99 including the gel.
