I'm wearing the same make-up now that I wore twenty years ago. Who can teach me something new?

When I say I'm wearing the same make-up, I don't mean the actual same make up (cos that would be fab value for money wouldn't it), but the same style. I've been thinking for a couple of years I should go and get some new ideas, tell me where I should go oh knowledgeable ones. Thanks.

Small hi-jack, but how much would you spend after a makeover at Bobbi Brown? I quite fancy a makeover but don't want to be either really embarrassed when I can't afford the make-up or bankrupt when I feel obliged to buy it all!

go to space NK - they have a wide range and won't push any particular brand on you, just what suits

brimfull · 02/01/2010 21:30

Do you pay for the makeover or is it free?

If free just buy whatever you want, can be cheapest thing or nothing. I can never not buy anything but usually only spend £20-30

Yy to charcoal grey eyeliner.

However, am now of an age where might have to give it up due to wrinkles.

If you wear blusher, don't put it in a mad wide stripe at side of face. Smile and do apples of cheeks and blend in madly. Should be very very subtle, blusher. I like that stain one that comes in a tiny tiny silver tube - is it Origins?

Gloss rather than lipstick, but not wetlook gloss. Just nice, soft, glossy lipstick. Reddish/crimson tones rather than brownish/orange if your teeth are starting to go a little dingy with age.

Personally I prefer dark sludgy or grey eyeshadows, even if for daytime. Very pale peachy pinkish or brownish eyeshadow just makes the wearer look like they have a nasty eyelid complaint, imvho.

elizabeth arden tinted 8 hour lip things are good - I have the berry. Is subtle.

Ha, I've started the Great Eyeliner War. Eyeliners at dawn and all that! (Still don't know whether to wear or not though ..)

Why would you put eyeliner on the inner upper eye lashes? Who would see it and how the bloody hell would you get it on there?!

Just to butt in, if you pay £25 you can get a makeover & make up lesson at MAC and the £25 is redeemable against anything you buy. They have these face outline picture things that they put the make up on for you so you can take it away and it shows you where everything goes. I am a recent convert to MAC after using a MAC artist for my wedding in the summer. Have never tried Bobbi Brown - think their products are quite a bit more expensive than MAC though, but never heard a bad review of them.

hbfac · 03/01/2010 03:28

SpaceNK and Bobbi Brown counter at John Lewis do lots of free make-overs. But I would be amazed if you went to Bobbi Brown and didn't walk away with a lipstick.

I'm pushing Bobbi Brown because I think they're a good place to start if you're a bit of an ingenue.

P. S. My fall-back look for going out, if I have little time, is eyeliner - on the inside - upper (just underneath root of lashes iyswim) and under, then eyeliner or (if more time) dark eye-shadow, as eye-liner, on the upper lid. And lipgloss. And a neutral colour on the eye first, in whitish-yellow. Maybe blusher. (Laura Mercier has a lovely eyeliner called "black-violet", which is black with a metallic violet sheen.)

I always hope that it makes me look like a cross between Jennifer Aniston and Kate Moss. But I am now v. v. worried following MsCornsilk's strict admonitions.

hbfac · 03/01/2010 05:16

Ah. I see Cybil posted a picture of Kate Moss!

Yes - that's the look I'm aiming for. [dream on, hbfac]

I'm seriously worried as to what I really look like now!

GleeE4 · 03/01/2010 10:39

the no 17 one in grey is also good
the texture metter in the doublwear one

auntycorny · 03/01/2010 11:40

Posting a pic of Kate Moss isn't really a fair argument now is it? That's like me posting a pic of Pete Burns.

CybilsDrivel · 03/01/2010 11:56

I was illustrating the point about inner rim lining.

And your new name makes me want to rest my head on your bosom, btw

auntycorny · 03/01/2010 12:01

awww - go ahead
