I want to treat myself to some posh new make up. I usually use No7 radiant touch foundation, any black eye liner, No 7 mascara and loreal lip gloss. I would like to try a more expensive foundation but I am not sure where to start. can anyone steer me in the right direction or advise me please

depends on how much you want to spend but i would highly recommend a visit to a large department store and ask the advice at the clinique or clarins counter. they might actually do all your makeup for you, doesnt cost a thing although they will do a fantastic job and you'll want to buy every product they used!
i like bobby brown too if i'm feeling flush!

go on treat yourself, you're worth it!

Prinnie · 29/12/2009 16:44

I would go around counters and get some ideas - also look at reviews on Ciao - I find them really good for finding out if products actually work and for if they would be suitable for me.

When I got married I invested in a few things which I would recommend (although I'd also recommend that you trial them at the counter before buying):

YSL radiant touch foundation
Lancome eyeshadow (amazing)
Clinique butter shine lipstick
Clinique lash power mascara

JaneiteQuiteRight · 29/12/2009 16:47

I would 'upgrade' your usuals - so if you like black eyeliner, get a Lancome or Clinique black eyeliner (both are gorgeous).

Clinique, Clarins or Lancome mascara would all be good (deffo better than No 7) but Max Factor is also way better than No 7.

Foundation - the new Max Factor Perfect Skin is good. Otherwise it depends on your colouring. Clinique tends to be too prangey/pinky for my v pale skin but I do like Prescriptives. Lots of people on here rate Chanel but I daren't go and try it as tis v expensive.

Clinique for lipstick. Mac for eyeshadows.

happilyeverafter · 29/12/2009 16:47

I would recommend Clarins for foundation, lancome or chanel for eyecolours, maybelline for mascara!

JaneiteQuiteRight · 29/12/2009 16:48

Clinique = orangey NOT prangey!

itchyandscratchy · 29/12/2009 16:51

have changed my skincare 'regime' to clinique and have seen great results. I agree clinique foundation a bit orangey but fine if diluted with a bit of moisturiser. Also have the chanel vitu-wotsit foundation which is lovely.

Got some lancome eyeshadow from dh for xmas and it is LUSH. Also secretly (without telling dh) bought some eyelash stuff from lancome before xmas which has thickened my lashes (promise!). You wear it at night and in day under mascara. Tis brilliant (although you look like andy warhol with just the base coat on)

thanks for all the replies, i use No7 mainly because of the £5 vouchers that boots chuck out at customers. My nearest department store is Debenhams which is about 10 miles away and stocks lancome, estee lauder, clinique and clarins though doesnt have chanel, Mac or bobby brown. I have had Chanel lipstick in a previous life before kids but would have to travel a bit further to try these other brands and then order on line if i liked them. Any one else with reccomendations please

I'm coming down to London next Saturday and was thinking of going for a make-over with a view to buying new make up at one of the big stores. Can I hijack with a few questions?

Do you have to book in advance?
I was thinking of Selfridges - which brand would you recommend?
Would I be thought odd if I asked to go and peer at the results in daylight before I bought as shop lighting can be deceiving?
Don't want to queue for hours as dd and I have quite a shopping list. When is it quiet at make up counters on a Saturday?

Thanks.
I have never used BB. Do they go for a simpler more natural look then?

hellsbelles · 29/12/2009 18:12

Chanel vitalumiere foundation is gorgeous and makes the skin look beautiful.

I have always used clinique translucent loose powder - I keep trying other brands but haven't found anything as light and natural on my skin

Laura Mercier do some fab liners (liquid) which are worth a go.

And 'by Terry' has a wonderful creme blush that looks very natural

florenceuk · 29/12/2009 18:24

went to space nk - they recommended me Chantecaille foundation (the liquid one) and that by terry blush - very natural! And a Lipstick queen lipstick. I got lots of personal attention even though I walked off the street. There is one near Peter Jones in Sloane Square.

bigknickersbigknockers · 29/12/2009 18:37

Hope the make over goes well Glinda, for some reason I am drawn to Lancome products... not for any reason other than I wouldnt have to travel to far to re stock. I want a foundation that is not matte and with some sort of light diffusing effect 9does that make sense) ?

OP posts:
glinda · 29/12/2009 18:46

Thanks!
Yes I think I know what you mean. I think that too matt can be aging (thinking of powdery old ladies!) and can emphasize tiny wrinkles. I am looking for a youthful dewy appearance - but it is a bit of a long shot at my age!

JaneiteQuiteRight · 29/12/2009 18:52

Ask at Clarins for a sample of Beauty Flash Balm which is good for making the skin look luminous before putting on foundation. Cream blush too.

Heathcliffscathy · 29/12/2009 18:55

mac mac mac for eyeshadow and in fact they do fantastic foundation which doesn't 'sit' on your skin as so many do i find. their concealer is the best too imo.

nars deffo for blusher/multistick.

purplepeony · 29/12/2009 19:14

Space NK is also in Marylebone High Street- nearer Oxford St than Peter Jones.

I use
Lancome mascaras
Dior 5 shadow eye palette
Clinique butter shine lippie
Clinique foundation- no one else seems to do it pale enough
Prescriptives blusher but they are closing down now- boo hoo.
Laura Mercier worth a look.

hellsbelles · 29/12/2009 20:42

prescriptives are closing down? Purple are you sure? I've been using their line preventor for years - I'll be gutted if I won't be able to get that!

traceybath · 29/12/2009 20:46

Dior Iconic mascara is fab.

Would echo chanel vitalumiere foundation, nars blusher and I'm currently using a chanel lipstick (silhouette - a lovely nude) and I do like dior lipglosses.

Dior foundation is getting lots of positive press at the moment but haven't tried it myself.

Bobbi Brown long lasting creme eye shadows and gel eye liner very good.

I'd go to space nk and a very good department store and ask lots of advice from the ladies who have good make up on behind the counters.

BitOfFun · 29/12/2009 20:52

What do people mean when they speak of investing in make-up? Do they intend to float it on the stock exchange after a few wears? It seems such a bizarre turn of phrase to me...

No intention to float anything on the stock market bit of fun... just spend a lot bit more cash than I am used to spending in the hope that these products will make me look like a 21 year old

JaneiteQuiteRight · 30/12/2009 15:35

Prescriptives stuff was all half price in HOF today. I managed to resist though as it all looked a bit jumble sale-ish.

purplepeony · 30/12/2009 15:48

I'd really recommend the Dior 5 shadow palette. I have used Clinique, Boots, Ruby and MIllie and this is the best. I put it on at 8am and it looks the same at 8pm. Costs about £34 for 5 shades but should last for ages.
I use Incognito- which is nudes.
