Ladies with highlights - please please come talk to me about roots

Have been highlighting for ages. Am in the US at the moment where they seem to have a good range of products for DIY root repair.

Has anyone retouching their own roots on hightlighted hair? I bought a product but the company (Clairol) says they don't recommend it. (Called the hotline, listened to a recording.) I can imagine it's for potentially very good reasons, but also they would so totally err on the side of caution here, I'm also not sure whether it is as much of a non starter as they say.

Any good stories out there? Or is it going to be like revisiting my disaster with Sun-in at 14?

at teenage sun-in disaster. ah yes, happy memories!

Never tried retouching own highlights but a couple of times have asked a hairdresser to just do some over the parting, between 'normal' jobs - was no problem getting them to do.

I have used the Nice N Easy root touch up thing. I matched it with my base colour which worked really well but guess depends how many highlights / how light your hair is.

I have a lot of highlights. A lot really. Did you avoid running it through the rest of your hair?

Bumping this also in the hope there are more out there with some experience of this!!

I've had too many disasters with home colouring to even think about it now. Am off to hairdressers in about 1 hour actually for colour Have used the home highlighter kit a few years back (Clairol) but not good results sadly. I would rather go to hairdressers less often than I should but get it coloured professionally

But Oxo within two weeks I have a white spot of regrowth in the front. And you could land a 747 down my parting at the moment - the Skunk look, as DH calls it. Need some sort of solution apart from spending 110 quid every eight weeks.

So what colour are you naturally?

GeorginaWorsley · 31/12/2009 12:41

This used to be me,harriet,too.
Hd honey blonde highlights in darker hair.
Have now gone back to pretty much my natural colour, darker brown, with just a few lighter caramel bits here and there.
Hve it done every 4 months, inbetween I use a root touch up in a blonde colour which covers my grey.I always go shades lighter in these things as they turn out so dark on me.

cornsilkcremeeggspotter · 31/12/2009 12:43

What is a root touch up?

rhapsodyinblue · 31/12/2009 13:20

My hairdresser has given me some of the colour and peroxide she uses for my base colour and I touch up the hairline and fringe after about 3 weeks which keeps me going until she comes again.

She explained how to mix it, how long to leave it on. I bought one of those root touch-up brushes which hairdressing supplies places sell.

£110? go to a student / model evening at hairdressers or local college, it'l cost you £100 LESS

BadRomance · 31/12/2009 13:35

When I had them I had them done 'under' my parting - it took a good 3 months before they needed attention.

stressheaderic · 31/12/2009 19:20

Another fan of Nice n Easy Root Touch-Up here - a doddle to use and gets me another 3 weeks or so out of my highlights.
