You know the rule about black boots and denim?

Are lovely black boots excusable?? Lovely Fly London bikerish boots like I got for my Christmas?!

Cos if I can't wear them with jeans then what on earth do I wear them with?!

Never heard of that rule either. Not surprising as my fashion faux-pas are legion.
However the boots in Chloe's example shouldn't be worn with anything IMO - or at all in fact .

KristinaM · 27/12/2009 17:18

you'll be ok , as the rule doesn't apply to vicars

newgirl · 27/12/2009 17:43

id like to wear boots with jeans inside them but i have wide calves - do you think it would defeat the object and id look chunky?

fanjolina · 27/12/2009 18:05

I agree OrmIrian. The issue with the boots Chloe linked to is the boots themselves - they are the fashion crime

DecorHate · 27/12/2009 18:15

I think the Mnetter who was the staunchest advocate of this rule has left so feel free to break it!

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 27/12/2009 19:16

newgirl - I have shot putter calves, boots need to be special and everthing. I wear the boots outside jeans thing, I tell myself people won't notice my huge calves. They'll think it's the boots

I have relatively slim thighs so think the whole thing balances

Agree boots linked to are definition of frump. This comes from the girl on the couch in aqua fleece dressing gown and bobbly too-short pj bottoms. Nice.

TwoIfBySeasonsGreetings · 27/12/2009 19:20

There are rules?

Do you get arrested by the fashion police if you break them?

Had I better be prepared (not that I wear those kind of boots anyway) to be taken into custody for being ignorant of rules?

You know, it would be easier if people just wore what they liked and what suited them. Yes? No?

Lonicera · 27/12/2009 19:26

and with a single sentence, TwoIf kills the multi-billion pound fashion industry

Caz10 · 27/12/2009 21:20

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh people take things too seriously sometimes!

Of course I wear what suits me
Of course I don't care what other people think!

BUT I will be the first to put my hand up and say I am not the best at putting things together, and prefer to look halfway decent rather than a twat, so thought I'd gather some opinions! Clearly I am not actually asking MN permission to wear my boots, I'll wear them anyway!

And to get back to a more important point - skinny dark jeans?!?

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 27/12/2009 21:25

black knee boots with skinny jeans tucked in = fine

black ankle boots with low block heel with jeans (usually slightly too short in length, and too high around the waist, possibly with a t shirt tucked in and a belt fastened tight) = not ok.

MissGreatBritain · 27/12/2009 21:29

ruddy - that's a beautiful image you've just painted

Lonicera, you have uncovered my evil plan...

mwahahahaha

islandofsodor · 28/12/2009 00:11

What rule. I have one pair of black boots, one pair of black shoes and 1 pair of dressy shoes bought to go to a wedding in. I wear them with everything until they wear out and I can afford to replace them.

At the moment my boots are leaking in but finances are tight after xmas.

I certainly could not have a pair to every outfit.

newgirl · 28/12/2009 19:31

tacky - where did you find boots for shot putter calves? i have thought about duo and am wondering if i measure my calves around my jeans to make sure they are wide enough - any advice please?!! hope this is not thread hijack and is just adding to boot/jean info

poinsettydawg · 28/12/2009 19:35

There is no rule.

Think about it - it doesn't make sense.

Wear whatever you want with denim.

tackyChristmastreedelivery · 28/12/2009 19:49

Well, the ones I got are by Duo. I know nothing about how they are sized and so on, as I got them from another mumsnetter! They fit though, that will do for me. Maybe give the site a go?

Or start a thread, there are lots of duo experts about I think. Good luck!

newgirl · 29/12/2009 13:11

thanks tacky

onadietcokebreak · 29/12/2009 13:22

newgirl Duo fan here.

If you want them so jeans tuck in then yes measure with jeans on.

newgirl · 29/12/2009 16:57

thanks dietcokebreak

lumpasmelly · 30/12/2009 13:28

If thats a style rule then Kate Moss and loads of other "icons" break that rule every other day!!!

My brother works for Marc Jacobs and he has reliably informed me that this is not a rule.
