Do you tip when you go to the hair salon?

I've been wondering about this, as generally I don't (been going to the same salon for years) and last time I went the hair-washy guy looked disappointed in me. I worry about some kind of planned revenge.

Is it normal to?

Yes, I give £5 (about 10%) to the hairdresser.

PuppyMonkey · 18/12/2009 14:55

I was thinking about this yesterday when in my hairdressers and a lot of other customers were tipping (Christmas etc) and I did nearly think: "Ooh maybe I should give something to.."

Then I got to the till and they told me my cut and colour was £80 thanks very much. I decided not to bother.

Anyway, no-one tips me and I do a good job too.

PandaG · 18/12/2009 14:59

No, never. But I did just give her a bag of fudge for Christmas.

hellsbelles · 18/12/2009 20:42

yes- i give 10-15% to the hairstylist and 2 or 3 quid to the hairwasher....

CristinaTheAstonishing · 18/12/2009 20:56

£3-£5 to the hairstylist, depending on how much change I have. At least they don't automatically add the "service charge" on the bill like they do in restaurants, and I bet no-one/few people challenge that one, even if the service wasn't personal and 1 hour long.

santaschristmascakeywakey · 18/12/2009 20:56

Yep, I tip about 10% of the cost. More if the girl who does my highlights has done super tip-top job. They treat me very well - am going tomorrow and they have a range of Christmassy booze on offer as well as the usual tea/coffee. Mmmmmmm

CristinaTheAstonishing · 18/12/2009 20:58

santaschristmascakeywakey - DH used to go to a barber's where they had beer for their customers. Then they stopped, saying they now have to be licensed to give it out. I wonder if that is true.

santaschristmascakeywakey · 18/12/2009 21:01

There was something about that in the papers Cristina, and I did flag it up with them at the time. Not sure how the land lies on it. Perhaps because they're not selling it, it's different.

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 18/12/2009 21:01

I have tipped my hair dresser £5 every time except once and I pay £46 to have it cut

I tipped the hair washer £3 once as she did a really good wash.

TBH I would prefer a no tipping policy as the hair cut costs enough.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 18/12/2009 21:05

Santas - these weren't selling it either. Maybe management just felt like tightening the belts and invoked H&S/its equivalent ("yeah, like, some rule from Brussels")

FabIsGettingReadyForXmas · 18/12/2009 21:08

PuppyMonkey Did you not know the cost before booking?

Openbook · 18/12/2009 21:12

Two quid to the stylist every time. Ten quid extra to go in the tips for the salon at Xmas. Find it difficult as I am a tightarse who, however, wants people to like me.

Louby3000 · 18/12/2009 21:15

I tip my cutter/stylist every other time £5, my cut is only £15, so I feel like that is a generous tip.
Although someone came to my house and coloured it- half head highlights and semi perm on the rest. He had quoted me £40 for cut and colour and I said I didnt want a cut, so at the end he charged me £35. No tip for him

Meglet · 18/12/2009 21:18

Yes, but only because mine are cheap, I just need a wash & trim and I don't go very often as I have long hair. Just a £1 extra for the hairwash girl (if she did it properly) and £1 for the girl that cuts it.
