Ugg boots. Are they as uncool as Crocs?

I was just wondering.
Are they practical? I think they make people look like they've gone out in their slippers and the heels always look like they've given way. What happens in the rain?

whelk · 17/12/2009 15:38

Eeeek - no!

whelk · 17/12/2009 15:39

Eeek no as in don't wear them - not no they are not as uncool as crocs!

PuppyMonkey · 17/12/2009 15:42

What is this? National Gang Up on Uggs Day? If you don't like em, don't wear em. If you do, do. Simples.

I like my Uggs, I wear them.
I don't likle Crocs, I don't wear them.

Course, you have to have fabulous legs like me to get away with Uggs, but there you go.

austinsmam · 17/12/2009 16:53

In years to come, everyone will be going what on earth were we thinking
Fine as comfy footware, but a real crime against fashion [biscuit)

LetThemEatCake · 17/12/2009 16:54

don't know about cool/ uncool but back in my childhood they were known as Ugly boots, worn by Westies and available for about $20 from Skinny's Sheepskin Warehouse.

Undeniably warm but definitely not out'n'about-wear, unless you've been for a winter surf and are trying to keep warm on the run from the sand back to the car.

Not sure about the chav thing, as I know plenty of classy women who wear them but they're just not practical in this wet climate. Not so bad if you live in the West Country but not a good look in town centres.

Paolosgirl · 17/12/2009 17:14

They are now also known as Fugglys - as in f*cking uglies...

TheHappyCat · 17/12/2009 17:17

Ah burstingtotalkaboutit, you have summed me up too
I always wonder, if I saw the Ugg-haters on the school run (or the school trudge as I do), would I be amazed and envious of your super style? I suspect probably not. But I doubt I would be quite so vitriolic as so many people manage to be about Uggs! Where's the problem?

thighsmadeofcheddar · 17/12/2009 17:21

Agree with other Aussies. Chav central.

In Australia, they were just like slippers, so the idea of wearing them outside in all weather is insane to me.

dexter73 · 17/12/2009 17:26

But we are not in Australia so does it matter what people there think of them?

Bonsoir · 17/12/2009 17:31

I'm sure they are warm and comfortable. They look really awful when worn outside though, and have unfortunate chav assocations.

A bit like Moncler jackets, with which they are frequently teamed.

dexter73 · 17/12/2009 17:37

Can't imagine chavs wearing Moncler jackets - they cost hundreds of pounds!

Bonsoir · 17/12/2009 17:41

Yes, you're right - a chav with money = bling...

BooHooo · 17/12/2009 17:42

I love them - have loads of pairs and they all look lovely and feel wonderfully warm. Really baffled as to why some feel so strongly against them tbh. I think I have an idea though...lol

Nevergoogle · 17/12/2009 18:27

I love a contentious thread

Stick with yer Hunters google

kellise · 17/12/2009 22:00

I loved my Uggs but was bitterly disapointed when a hole apeared in the toe of one of them makeing them now unwearable which considering I'd had them a couple of months and the cost of them I find rather annoying. As they were a gift also I have no recipt or come back so stuck with a pair of beautiful expensive boots that I can't sodding wear!

Sazisi · 17/12/2009 22:30

I finally succumbed and bought myself a pair of Emus in Melbourne airport a few weeks ago.
I said I never would, yet here I am.
And they are so toasty and lovely and I don't regret it a bit

SugarMagrundy · 17/12/2009 22:48

I smile when I see them teamed with the flannel check shirts that are in style now, because it reminds me of the bevans back in my Aussie youth ... all they need is a pack of Winnie Blues hanging out the shirt pocket to complete the picture

I love mine for round the house - they are so old they have got bald patches!

LetThemEatCake · 17/12/2009 23:09

Winnie Blues!! my first ever smokes!!

dexter etc - I don't think it matters necessarily what people from Australia think of them; what matters is the fact that the purpose/ function of Uggs is so blatantly apparent in their appearance. So they look just as daft when worn in shopping centres etc as do a pair of glitzy heels. Nothing wrong with the shoe, every wrong with the context.

They became a fashion 'essential' after two things happened: Pamela Anderson wore them on the set of Baywatch to keep her feet warm (see my earlier comments about beachwear) and Gwyneth Paltrow wore them to/ from yoga class. No shopping, no running after kids in parks, no lunching at the pub, no grocery/ school run.

They are scuffy, slouchy footwear. And eminently suited to that purpose. Lovely and warm and comfy. I will stick mine on in a minute to put the recycling out

Nevergoogle · 17/12/2009 23:22

Yes i have my hunters.
Nothing chevy about them.

But lots of clothes that have a function have passed into being acceptable on a day to day basis. There was a thread about wearing wellies out and that seemed to be ok with people. Also people wear exercise clothes when they aren't exercising! Denim used to be worn on farms and railroad workers and is now the most fashionable fabric around.

SueW · 18/12/2009 08:45

Loads of wellies in Manhattan both in August and October when I was there. It seems they are worn at the slightest hint of wet weather - perhaps to save the Manolos, Choos, Louboutins, etc.

I held out against Uggs for ages. In the end I bought British from Celtic Sheepskin and I am so glad I have them now - they truly keep my feet warm. I have their scuffs for in the house and their popper boots for outside.

I've got a bit sheepy mad, to be honest (I remember both my parents having sheepskin jackets in the 70s and now I understand why!) and have treated myself to these gorgeous sheepskin gloves from Southcombe

(Shhh, don't tell anyone but this pink pair accidentally slipped into my basket too )
