Am I shallow?

... to want to dress DD up nicely?

Can I just say I hate the pink/sparkly/princess stuff but equally I want her to look nice too. She is two, by the way.

The problem is that most of her clothes are hand-me-downs, for which we are extremely grateful, but nothing really "goes" iyswim. She always looks quite mismatched and vaguely scruffy.

DH is vehemently anti-pink and recently at a nearly-new sale he bought some quite boyish stuff for DD, which I'm not keen on at all.

Is it very superficial of me to want to dress my DD all pretty? I'm torn because I don't want to teach her that appearances are more important than other stuff. But I don't like my own appearance and feel very frumpy since having babies (lack of time, energy and money). I used to be considered "elegant", now I'm definitely mumsy. I'm in my mid-30s. I can't remember the last time I had the opportunity to browse in a clothes shop, or afford anything new.

Anyone else feel this conflict? I want to strike the right balance of enjoying being a girl (for me and DD) and not placing too much emphasis on appearances.

yes I agree, I have an 18 month old dd and I love to dress her nicely! I hate pink and frilly too and get most of her stuff second-hand, mostly off ebay. I like boyish stuff ok, but I prefer colourful girls stuff that isn't pink ISWIM. For example I have got her some lovely colourful tights in all colours, cord skirts (red and blue as well as pink), cute boden tops, cardigans in all colours and a lovely elegant navy wool coat, all second-hand off ebay, and it all looks lovely, is not pink and is cozy and comfy for running around in the park.

If you're shallow to take pleasure out of your dd's clothes, then so am I! (After all, it's not as if we can take pleasure in buying lots of nice clothes for ourselves now, is it?!)
