Help me decide what to wear please :-)

DH's christmas "do" on Friday. It is lunch at a v posh golf club (Queenwood). And I am struggling to decide what to wear. Dress code says cocktail but I am thinking that cocktail for lunch is different from cocktail for evening.....

I was going to buy something new but decided to buy myself a gorgeous dress from Hush instead which I can wear any old day of the week!

So, my choices from my wardrobe are:

A deep v-neck silk sweater dress from Zara. It is a beautiful blue-grey, long sleeves - top half is very loose and oversized (iyswim) and I usually wear it with a wide belt around the waist. Don't have an exact link but it looks very similar to this Vanessa Bruno one

The alternative is this piece of gorgeousness from Toast in Magpie Blue.

Would accessorise either with silver statement necklace, simple silver dress watch, wolford black opaques and black patent heels.

So which to wear???

first one definately

Prinnie · 09/12/2009 21:56

Yep I'd agree - the 1st one, it sounds lovely. Have fun

shopalot · 09/12/2009 22:04

I think second one as I think the velvet nods towards cocktail without beingg ott. You may be hot in the first one as well.

tulpe · 09/12/2009 23:23

okay. clearly need more opinions now!

Shopalot - the nod towards cocktail with dress no.2 was what I was thinking too.

geordie & prinnie - I can totally see why you went for option 1 That's my gut reaction too but am worried it won't be dressy enough, iyswim.

Basically, I want DH to canvass all women in office with the ever-important question "what are you wearing?"!! Chances of that happening are slim to none!

aaarrrggghhh!!!!!!

Surely something like this would be more appropriate?
Your dresses aren't elegant enough

mrsruffallo · 09/12/2009 23:48

Or this?

tulpe · 10/12/2009 12:28

Mrs R, those are very beautiful dresses but I have no inclination to go out and spend £500 - £1K on a dress for a works event this year.

Every year, I do go out and spend approx £500 on an outfit and then shake my head in wonder the day after the event - unsure of why I bothered.

However, I have taken on board the issues of elegance and have decided to channel the queen of elegance herself - Chanel. I am going for:

this navy trophy jacket which is actually more fitted than it looks - shrunken and not in the least bit Cilla. I really recommend taking a look at this jacket. Sequins are sewn on rather than stuck on and none of this nasty polyster on show like many in the stores right now (I am sure there is polyester in the jacket.......it just doesn't look cheap, iyswim).

Together with a navy blue silk dress I have from Cacharel. I can't find a link but it is drop waisted, sleeveless, pin-tuck pleating down the centre of the dress and finishes just above the knee. So v elegant indeed

Will accessorise with silver cuff and either long string of pearls or silver pendant.

Can I wear black opaques and black patent heels?

OP posts:
VerityBrulee · 10/12/2009 12:58

I love navy with black patent, looks v chic. Sounds like a great outfit

I am going through a chanel phase at the moment, even considering ebaying my mulberry and anya hindmarch to put towards a chanel 2.55. But I am hormonal and prone to do things I may regret in the future!

mathanxiety · 10/12/2009 16:35

Don't wear pearls with sequins; go with the silver pendant. Don't wear the opaques with the sequins/ patent heels either. Go for regular tights (not opaque).

tulpe · 10/12/2009 16:47

mathanxiety - define "regular" tights - do you mean a fine denier? And if so, what colour?

OP posts:
BunnyLebowski · 10/12/2009 16:51

NO definitely not fine denier tights. They are seriously old-ladyish.

Your outfit sounds amazing. Go for 70 denier plus. Will look fab.

tulpe · 10/12/2009 16:57

Yeah, I thought finer denier would be old lady-ish too but am always open to suggestions

I have Wolford Velvet opaques (which are totally solid black) so was going to wear those.

VerityBrulee · 10/12/2009 18:30

Velvet opaques will be perfect. Have fun!

tulpe · 10/12/2009 18:47

Thanks Verity I think I am slowly looking forward to it now!

And thanks to everyone who replied

That's better, tulpe. I think you are going to look gorgeous.
I linked to those dresses for inspiration. I wouldn't expect too many people to spend a thousand pounds on a cocktail dress!
Anyway, I approve of your new choisce and think you are going to look fab.

tulpe · 10/12/2009 21:16

Thanks Mrs R . Apologies if my response was a bit snippy it wasn't meant that way. I had "stressing over DH's work do-itis"
