How do i make myself spend money on myself for a change? Not that i can really afford to.

I have found 2 jumpers that i like but can't warrant spending nearly £50 on myself. I have the money but should use it more wisely.

Kids have plenty for christmas and food is pretty much sorted. So why do i feel wrong buying myself something? I almost never spend money on myself, it all goes on food, house and stuff kids need.

This could be my only chance to treat myself, i could call it a christmas present to myself as i don't get anything from anyone else. But then i think, but £50 is a lot of money and it might be needed next week for something important.

take the money put it in your knicker draw. Take it back out boxing day, and go shopping FOR YOURSELF!!. You will get more for your money which means you wont feel so selfish about spending it on yourself (though you shouldnt anyway) and it much better value for money so you may get more than just 2 jumpers

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 08/12/2009 20:12

get over yourself

do you want martyr as the epitaph on your gravestone ?

mothersmilk · 08/12/2009 20:26

oh thats a bit mean i dont take spending £50 lightly either

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 08/12/2009 20:28

she has the money

she rarely spends on herself

kids sorted

xmas sorted

I would have no problem whatsoever treating myself

I wouldn't even question it

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 08/12/2009 20:31

That is the trouble though, i do have a problem treating myself. I am a single parent on benefits and have had to be so careful with money. Just because i have it in the bank, doesn't mean i can spend it on myself. I am sorry if that makes me sound odd but i just find it hard.

I know exactly the weird way it works. You can have spare cash but there is always something 'better' to spend it on.
I say buy now or that money will go.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 08/12/2009 20:37

no, not odd but why shouldn't you treat yourself at xmas ?

being on benefits doesn't mean you can't buy yourself stuff, you know

do you need new jumpers ?

if so, buy 'em, why deprive yourself if you can spare the money?

you can either spare the money, or you cannot

which is it ?

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 08/12/2009 20:38

or buy one jumper

sorted !

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 08/12/2009 20:41

Thanks for replies.

Yes, i do need new jumpers but could get cheaper if i bought different ones. But i like these ones.

Thing is, it isn't a case of being able to spare the money. There always seems to be better ways to spend it ie putting more gas on pre-payment card so that we aren't cold so often!

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 08/12/2009 20:44

buy new jumpers and you will need to spend less on heating !

I am being facetious now, but if you really like the jumpers just get one of them.

fishie · 08/12/2009 20:45

you can keep warm in jumpers. do you think they might be in sale?

otherwise do go for it, it isn't an extravagent purchase and you will have a present too.

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 08/12/2009 21:00

Have been looking at them for over a year! And not been in the sale yet. They are on a online site so not in store.

I am going to get one i think, and see what the bank has tomorrow then maybe get 2nd one.

< punches air >

unless you are taking food out of your kid's mouths, life is too short to not buy a new jumper at xmas !

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 08/12/2009 21:09

Nope have plenty of food in. Did a christmas shop today.
Just eaten a bar of choc that was meant to be for my mum though .

Change of plan Only had £26 in the bank, £10 had to go on electric!
Oh well, another day maybe!

I have the same issue. Even paying for a £45 cut and blow dry makes me feel guilty!! I am always thinking with 5 kids that the money could be spent on something they need!

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 09/12/2009 10:10

I havne't managed a hair cut in about 3 mths! That was next on my list of things to do for myself. Mine is only £15 though so not too much. Hair is a right mess though!

Fruitysunshine · 09/12/2009 10:18

I wanted to try a home hairdresser as my friend does and she says they are less expensive (not having a salon to pay for etc.) but I am always wary!

ISawTortoiseFuckingSantaClaus · 09/12/2009 11:08

That sounds ok. Mine is a local hairdressers and they are cheap as it is a small town. Plus i (normally)only need a quick dry cut.

FWIW
I used to do the martyr thing. It was never intentional - I just had this fixed notion that the children came first ( which they did) but that then grew into this irrational sense of guilt if I treated myself.

Then my Dh became really cross about it. His arguement was that I was teaching my DCs, especially DD, that you have children and then cease to be a person of value but a provider and nothing else.

I had not really considered that before and realised that I would absoloutely hate my DD or DS's to grow up and think that life is all about self denial and self flagellation.

Parnets should treat themselves as long as they are not denying their children necessary things.
And I think DCs should be encouraged to see giving their mum or dad a treat as something worth doing.

Being a martyr is actually not in ANYONES best interests even though it may feel like you are doing the right thing.

Get the jumper as soon as you have the cash. You know it makes sense

PotPourri · 09/12/2009 11:23

I'm the same - often spend spare money on teh kids who really don';t need it - but it makes me feel like I am treating myself in a way.

Agree with original suggestions. Put it in your drawer, on boxing day go and do the sales - you'll get 4 jumpers!!

DisElfchanted3 · 09/12/2009 11:25

Just decide to.

Ive been wearing DHs stuff for years

Ive just bought myself some somes, boots, tights, a few dresses and a cardi

I think its the most ive ever spent on myself, but i wanted to, so I did, haven't wanted to for years!

lupo · 09/12/2009 21:15

Tortoise, please get your self one of the jumpers if you havent got money for both, you sound like you really want them especially as you have been looking at them for nearly a year.. is it £50 for both or each..

Thinks some of the comments on here have been a bit harsh, get one sounds like you deserve it, then get another when you have some more money..do you have a link to it..

Or check on ebay, you may get them cheaper
