Starting afresh with make up - what are your top 5 must have's

newtoitallmummy · 07/12/2009 16:09

I need an overhaul and am starting with make up - throw out the old and outdated and looking to buy some new products.

I am a mum. I don't have much time (durrr!) and I am not very inclined towards making an effort unless I have a reason.

So I am hoping to find four or five key things that I can have in a little make up bag that make a lot of difference in a little time - like a couple of minutes. I am not completely delusional - I know I won't look instantly younger and smoother but am just going for looking a little more together and a bit less ragged, more polished if you will.

Can you help? Please?!?

Thank you

beauty flash balm
laura mercier tinted mosituriser
chanel vitalumiere foundation
smashbox clear primer
prescriptives magic liquid powder

CybilLiberty · 07/12/2009 16:19

No 7 compact foundation

A nice pinky blusher choose a stick one and you can double up as a lippy with gloss

ONE eye shadow that you can sweep in the hollows of your lids to give shape and pop a little underneath your eye

Eyebrow pencil

black mazzie

thats all I wear

LaDiDaDi · 07/12/2009 16:20

Benefit Boing concealer, very good. Most people buy No2 shade apparently.

CybilLiberty · 07/12/2009 16:32

Oh yes I should have added that but that would make 6 things which isn't allowed. I use shade 1, cos I am fair. But tis a great concealer

JustAnotherManicMummy · 07/12/2009 16:33

Sorry I have 10 First 5 are essential essentials.

Pressed powder. Shiney is not a good look. Any brand, really, they're all essentially the same thing.

Stick concealor. My fave is cheapy Collection 2000.

Good mascara - but replace every few months. Maybelline have the pink and green one(packaging, not colour. I forget the name) that all the beauty eds rave about.

Touche Eclat from YSL.

Eye pencil - again collection 2000. You really don't need anything fancy.

Good moisturiser. I like Dermalogica as a brand but whatever works for your skin.

Blusher. I like Bloom atm. Little pots you can dab on your cheek bones and your lips.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream. Can be used on lips and to tame unruly brows as well as giving shine to cheekbones when used sparingly.

Neutral lipstick. A quick slick can lift your whole face.

Good foundation for when you are looking particularly rough/going out. I like Perscriptives but again whatever suits your skin. Get samples from the beauty counter so you can apply and wear at home, in natural light not shop strip lighting. When I was a student I used to go to department stores and get samples of my favourite foundation instead of spending £35 on a bottle. Don't think I bought any for the whole 3 years

And get yourself a nice pencil case to put your new makeup in. Don't buy expensive make up bags - they never wash well. Get a cheapo pencil case for a pound or two and replace regularly.

MarjoryMoores · 07/12/2009 16:41

Good foundation is essential - I use bobbi brown cream compacts that are quick to apply and leave a really flawless finish.

Creamy blush - doubles up as a lipstick

Good mascara - I like lancome

Good lipgloss/lipstick

MarjoryMoores · 07/12/2009 16:42

Oh and a primer - I use No 7 shine free one as have combination skin. Laura Mercier is v good too.

Bonsoir · 07/12/2009 16:42

Guerlain Terracotta (and the large soft brush needed to apply it properly)
Guerlain liquid black eyeliner
A four-shadow palette of eyeshadows in browns and beiges
Lancôme black mascara

JustAnotherManicMummy · 07/12/2009 16:45

Superdrug had 3 for 2 on all cosmetics recently. Don't know if they still do, but it'll save you a fortune if still on

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 07/12/2009 16:45

Mac powder
Bourjois touche eclat thing
maybelline great lash mascara
bourjois eye shadow
clinique lip stick (sweet honey is my favourite)

DottyDot · 07/12/2009 16:46

My two key things are a brown smudgy eyeliner (mine's from the Body Shop) that I use under my eyes and then as eyeshadow as it smudges nicely and then a dark brown mascara - couldn't leave home without putting those 2 things on!

Other than that, I've got a deep purple eyeshadow that I like and then a mix of eyeshadow which includes a really light sparkly type white colour - good for making me seem less haggard tired.

4th thing which isn't essential but I use when I'm trying to feel human glamorous is some mineral powder - all over the face - kind of evens me out a bit!

Oh yes I'm such a make up guru...

coffeeinbed · 07/12/2009 16:47

Strobe cream to mix with my foundation.
good brushes!

SunChaser · 07/12/2009 16:59

black mascara
rosy-coloured cream blush
creamy foundation
soft eyeliner (I use a grey one)
under-eye concealer

SerenityNowAKABleh · 07/12/2009 17:00

Mine are:

  • YSL Touche Eclat to look less haggard/eye-baggy
  • Mascara
  • Blush of some sort
  • neutral coloured eye shadow. At the moment I'm using a light browny one from Mac
  • Mac's mineral powder for one I'm looking REALLY bad.
SerenityNowAKABleh · 07/12/2009 17:02

Other things to help - keep nails shortish, with cuticles massaged in and then paint with clear polish. I do this once a week/fortnight, takes about five minutes, and makes you look much more polished. Also, a perfume that you LOVE. It will lift your spirits and make you feel more glamourous

Lapsedrunner · 07/12/2009 17:03

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm under foundation.

purplepeony · 07/12/2009 17:03

my essentials would be:
foundation- favour Clinique
concealer- Bobbi Brown, the best ever and rated by all the beauty eds.
eye pencil
mascara- always Lancome
blusher - Laura Mercier or Prescriptives who sadly will not exist in January.
lipgloss
and if I could have a 7th it would be eye shadow. Palette of neutrals- Dior, Bobbi Brown or No 7 is strapped for cash.

frogetyfrog · 07/12/2009 17:06

Looked at the last link for that clarins beatuy flash balm. It promises a lot. Does it actually work?

BlingLoving · 07/12/2009 17:08

I'm assuming you're on top of cleaning, toning and moisterizing?
In which acse:

A really good foundation - I am addicted to Mac, but whatever works for you.
A good blusher/bronzer - I like Guerlain
Mascara - essential
Two lipsticks - one neutral for day and a darker/brighter version for other times
Lip gloss

Pinner35 · 07/12/2009 17:11

My essentials are :

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser
Bobbi Brown shimmer brick
YSL faux cils mascara (and ALWAYS use a eyelash curler no matter how short your eyelashes)
Clinique Lipgloss in "Mystic"
Touche Eclat

All well known and relatively expensive, but they do the job, make me look good and last (both on your face and in terms of product).

sherby · 07/12/2009 17:14

Mac studio finish conceler and the brush that goes with it

A good set of tweezers, save the stray chin/eyebrow/nose look till you are 90

Maybelline mascara (but am trying that double ended l'oreal one at the moment)

these are my do not leave the house without unless dying/fire/apocalypse type situation

roary · 07/12/2009 17:18

Baby steps:
professional brow shape
eyelash curler
mascara
touche eclat

groomed brows will make you look polished all the time. Esp dark brows. Touche and mascara will make you look awake. Instant glam in under 2 mins.

I would then go to mac and get a consultation. Goal is 2 coordinating shadows one for lid and one for crease and liner. Then you can wear liner one on its own and crease on its own. Bingo: 3 looks. Will require good eyeliner brush mac is the best here! And will help you choose great colours. Don't be afraid of colour!

newtoitallmummy · 07/12/2009 17:22

Wow! Thank you all so much and keep em coming! I have used and love lancome mascara so I shall go and get a nice new tube. I have a few neutral lipsticks/glosses and a bobbi brown cream blusher stick thing that I will keep.

Its the make the skin look better stuff I haven't a clue about. I notice laura mercier tinted moisturise and ysl concealer type things mentioned. Also mineral make up but I have to confess to being a bit ignorant and therefore head-in-the-sand about that . . . any top tips?

Thanks again!

My 5 essential items for my morning 2 minute 'haggard to presentable' pre-school run routine are:

Tinted moisturiser (I use Laura Mercier)
Blusher (Bourjois Rose D'or)
Mascara (Maybelline Great lash waterproof)
Concealer (No 7 Touche Eclat rip off)
Tinted lip balm (i have lots. Currently Vaseline rosy lips)

Although, I actually carry the Vaseline and some pressed powder in my handbag so can apply those on the run, therefore they don't count in the 5 items as they don't take up time before leaving the house. I do use eye drops every morning.

RnB · 07/12/2009 17:27

YSL perfect touch foundation
Clinique eyebrow fineliner (excellent)
MAC blusher
elizabeth arden 8 hour cream ointment as a lipsalve/shine
Clinique mascara
