help - tell me the secret to walking gracefully in heels...

I've just bought my christmas party outfit including an amazing pair of shoeboots that have a 4.5 inch stiletto heel and a slight platform.

They look amazing when I stand still....but if I even try and walk I resemble a man in drag - tottering about (I don't usually wear heels). Please tell me your secret to walking confidently in high heels - I really don't want to have to send them back.

walk on the front part of the sole. If you are walking correctly there shouldn't be much pressure on the heel (you shouldn't hear the hight heels hitting the floor).

Now, this is all theory as I hate high heels but I stumbled upon a video on this in YouTube

oh thanks - that's interesting - I shall see if I can find the video - I didn't even think of you tube!

I hate them too but they do make legs look amazing so I'm determined to get it right this one time

tummy in, shoulders back, don't look at your feet. practice!

Maintaining good posture is key. You should practice walking around the house first of all, maybe on tip toes to get used to having your centre of gravity shifted forward.

clench your bum cheeks together, tum in, try to keep your heels off the ground, one foot in front of the other in little steps..

thanks all - it's a bloody science isn't it?! I shall get practicing now

Shoulders back and tummy in, backside out. Keep your knees as close together as possible, and put one foot in front of the other when you take a step. Take short steps (very important), and don't hit the ground with the heel of the shoe, but with the whole shoe, almost. Your rear end should swing a bit from side to side.

Listen to this; none of the women does a great job walking, but listen to the instructor.

Look up, heel should hit first but only just, and swing your hips. Don't walk on tip toes and don't walk with knees permanently bent!

will read this with interest, just got some heels, fat ones, not even high and I look like a tipsy rhino

And I find the 'click clack' sound when I walk embarresing, lime its shouting to everyone 'look at Dis!! ... shes wearing her Mummys big girl shoes!!'

hellsbelles · 07/12/2009 17:43

Dis - glad to hear it's not just me
