I'd love to know what products I should be using, but I don't want some salewoman just trying to earn commission. Where could I go? It would be good if it were impartial, but tbh I don't care if the person I see is linked to a certain brand I just want to know which products would genuinely be good for me. Years ago there was a chap at Dickens and Jones who did something like this - he was on tv for a while and wore 'flamboyant' jackets (can't remember his name).

space NK are ace - they sell loads of different brands so will recommend what suits you.

Not sure I can afford Space NK tbh.

If you go to a beautician they will be able to do that for you. Some may offer free consultations, with others you might have to book a facial or treatment of some description. Only thing with that is different salons will stock, and therefore be biased towards, particular products/brands.

Sadly Bigpores, I remember the chap to who you are referring: John Gustafson!

But no suggestions.

you can order stuff from QVC and send back if you have tried it and you don't like it.

I've got a book written by an American, Paula Begoun, called "Don't go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". She analyses most brands of cosmetics and make-up and gives an honest view based on how they wear and their ingredients rather than on the brand name and advertising.
The book also recommends the best products for different skin types.
I've found it invaluable when buying beauty products.

I think if you go to a Shiseido counter (Selfridges, House of Fraser), they analyse your skin type under a microscope. I had it done years ago but wasn't keen on their products.

I use Sisley (Selfrides, Harrdods, Harvey Nics) - they are very generous with samples. I have been using this brand for years as their stuff is plant based and it does work. I

Dermalogica is fantastic - they do this thing called face mapping which is usually free and then recommend products for you. I switched to them a couple of years ago and have never looked back. More expensive than the skincare i was using previously but soooo worth it. If you go to your local salon to get the recommendations then you can buy it a lot cheaper on line.
