Table detting for Christmas

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 08:57

I wasn't sure if this should go here or in Good Housekeeping...I'll try here first!
We are hosting Christmas this year for the first time in years. Obviously I want everything to loook great but I am stressing about the dining table for the Christmas lunch. We live in an old cottage and so my decorations are mainly dark reds and gold, which complement the style of the house. Ideally, I would decorate the dining table with reds and golds as well. HOWEVER our 'smart' plates etc are Denby Imperial Blue, which is white with blue rims. It won't go at all with reds and golds.

So so trivial, I know, but please does anyone have any ideas for a lovely looking scheme for the table, incorporating the damned blue-rims? Whites and silver? Blue is not a very Christmassy colour, really...I'd change the whole lot if I had my way but DH would never let me!!

Thanks!

Thread title - table SETTING

bump? this is obviously the wrong place

In the scale of things does it really matter what colour your plates are

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 18:56

Nope.

Aww, no need for the face.

I was just intrigued to find out what a 'table detting' was

Umm...will have a think about plates + matching table dsetting.

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:03

I know how utterly trivial my query is, and I did say so in my OP, but are most 'style and beauty' posts deeply highbrow and serious anyway?!!

Thanks Rindercella - I think I'm going for whites and silvers with the touch of blue. Table will be all covered with plates of food and remnants of crackers anyway so the setting will prob not even show

You are over thinking this.

No one will be bothered by your blue rimmed plates.

CybilLiberty · 03/12/2009 19:05

do simple simple simple

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2009 19:06

Don't do silver and blue decorations on the table if the rest of the house is red and gold.

It will clash.

Hullygully · 03/12/2009 19:08

I think you can absolutely have white plates with blue rims and then lots of red and gold. It will look very imperial. Blue and white/silver is cold.

Rindercella · 03/12/2009 19:10

I think you should just decorate the table with gold...gold and blue go beautifully and then that will tie-in with the rest of your red/gold theme, without having the immediate clash of red/gold/blue on your table.

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:10

True re clash but I can't see any way around it. (Apart from buying all new plates which would be ridiculous just for one day!!)

OP posts:
CybilLiberty · 03/12/2009 19:11

no get new plates, a pound a pop in Wilco.

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:12

Sorry cross posts - thanks Hullygully, and Rindercella - I hadn't thought of it like that before, of actually 'embracing' the blue
Many thanks!

OP posts:
Hullygully · 03/12/2009 19:12

Red gold and blue do so not clash. What is wrong with you people?

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2009 19:16

I think you should buy all new white plates.

You obviously made a grave error with your wedding list.

CybilLiberty · 03/12/2009 19:18

get some ceramic paint and repaint the rims

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:21

Very true Lynette - eight years ago my taste was somewhat different!! Maybe I should get married again and have another wedding list?

Ceramic paint - I'm afraid I don't know if you're joking or not, Cybil...would that actually work?? (Dumb emoticon)

Hullygully · 03/12/2009 19:22

Take no notice of Cybil, she has been at the sherry to clebrate the advent of the christmas season. She is a BIG fan.

Red gold and blue. it'll be lovely.

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:24

Thanks all!!

This is quite a fun website:

here

You might get some ideas.

Have a lovely Christmas

MissGreatBritain · 03/12/2009 19:33

Gold goes very nicely with blue. How about blue and gold, with a few touches of cream here and there? I think blue with silver always seems a bit "cold", so the gold and cream would make it a bit warmer.

DecorHate · 03/12/2009 19:38

Leave out the gold and just have red and blue. V tasteful!

thesleepyprincess · 03/12/2009 19:41

Great ideas - hurray!
