Make up for teenagers!! And other Xmas ideas....

deaddei · 01/12/2009 15:08

DD is 13 and occasionally wears a bit of mascara /lipgloss.
I'd like to get her a foundation for Xmas- not a heavy one, maybe more along the lines of a tinted moisteriser.
I got her a Hollister lipgloss- any other ideas for a teenager you've seen?
Also ds (10) is desperate for Lynx ...I know, I know. Do you think it's appropriate to get him some for his stocking? He uses a deoderant anyway (when he remembers)

yes to deoderant
no no no to foundation at 13 - she might get loads of spots becuase of not washing off properly.

i think i would buy a nice skin care range cleanser toner moisturiser, cotton pads etc

deaddei · 01/12/2009 15:17

Yes I'd wondered about that side of foundation- she uses Amie products which are really gentle, and is getting the odd spot.

Don't get her foundation at 13 but maybe a light mineral powder?

TrillianAstra · 01/12/2009 15:24

Get DS antiperspirant and teach him the difference between that and deodorant.

Seriously, this is an important life lesson that most boys/men do not leanr early enough.

TrillianAstra · 01/12/2009 15:25

At 13 makeup should be fun, IMO. So anything coloured (eyeshadow, eyeliner, lip stuff, nail varnish) is better than powder, which is just saying 'your skin isn't good n
enough on its own'.

deaddei · 01/12/2009 15:25

Trillian, could you teach me???

littledawley · 01/12/2009 15:26

What about a few bits from Benefit or Mac? Their stuff is quite young and funky. Mac consultants are brilliant so if you asked they could give you some ideas. (not cheap though, I spent £103 with them yesterday!!)

ChrisMissWooWoo · 01/12/2009 15:27

tinted moisturiser with an SPF ... much nicer

oother ideas? a nice bag for all her essential items when she's out and about

TrillianAstra · 01/12/2009 15:28

Deodorant: has a smell
Antiperspirant: stops you sweating (and has a smell)

Most of the female stuff that we call 'deodorant' is already antiperspirant.
Most of the male stuff (lynx etc) is just a smell, with no useful effect. Lynx, gilette, etc all do sell antiperspirant though, you just have to look more carefully at the can.

While you're at it, explain that spraying stuff is no substitute for washing. Future potential girlfriends will thank you

deaddei · 01/12/2009 15:30

I will print this off Trillian and tell him if he doesn't do what you say, you'll come round

My teen nieces love Hard Candy and Urban Decay. I got many, many brownie points last year for buying those sets.

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/12/2009 15:33

Think 13 is a bit young for foundation - they don't really need it at that age do they, only when they hit their twenties and their skin starts going all grey!

After having my 13 year old covet my Urban Decay stuff, I am going to get her one of their palettes for Chrimbo, think they are around £20 or so. Added bonus will be I could 'borrow' it then.

Also going to get her some glittery eyeliner and juicy tubes-esque lipgloss. Sainsbury's is quite good for make up stuff I notice, saw some gift boxes on three for two the other day, including a great big make up palette for about a tenner.

Soap and Glory smellies from Boots would also go down in this house as well (with both mother and daughter).

I boight some Lancome stuff the other day and got a make up bag full of freebies. I am managing to resist the temptation and am keeping it for dd's stocking (has mini face wash, toner, moisturiser, juicy tube, make up palette).

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/12/2009 15:34

Those bronzing pearls thingies are also much loved.

frakkinaround · 01/12/2009 15:35

When I was a teen I adored Benefit and Urban Decay. Agree that make up should be fun and experimenting with bright colours and glitter is an important rite of passage.

But if OP's daughter is getting self-concious and asking for foundation then a mineral powder is better than a foundation. Depends on your motivation for getting her the foundation.

JollyMrsChristmas · 01/12/2009 15:35

No7 do a very good light tinted moisturiser.

theminniebauble · 01/12/2009 15:35

Agree re Hard Candy and Urban Decay- My DN loves them.

The colours are vivid and funky. Therefore they distract from her wanting to wear thick foundation that clogs her pores!

Benefit stuff is gorgeous too the packaging is wonderful and the actual makeup itself is top quality.

Tortington · 01/12/2009 16:11

dd has a tinted moisturiser from boots.

but i would rather eat my own arse than let a little girl of 13 wear it.

quite different to a 15 or 16 yr old imo

just ...no!

GetOrfMoiLand · 01/12/2009 16:15

My dd (14 this month) has borrowed/nicked my foundation before. I usually ask her to wipe it off, her skin is lovely and looks deeply wierd covered up. Mine on the other hand...

ChrisMissWooWoo · 01/12/2009 16:20

a (light) tinted moisturiser with an SPF is a good way of getting into the habit of looking after your skin from an early age.

If she starts using it now maybe she won't need to use foundation later in life as her skin will be so good

deaddei · 01/12/2009 16:41

I was thinking of a light tinted moisteriser rather than Bet Lynch slap....
think I'll have a look at Hard Candy etc. She is very much my "little" girl and I don't want her looking like a painted harlot!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 01/12/2009 17:05

I have a 13 dd, she's just started wearing foundation (ugh) as sadly all her mates do when going out shopping etc

She uses a pale no 17 which actually looks fine. She's been asking me for makeup advice but I am clueless myself as wear as little of the stuff as poss

i second idea of getting some wipes though. Getting the stuff off is really awful

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 01/12/2009 17:07

Oh I'm putting deodorant in my ds's stocking too. (also 10 yrs). This is a service to the entire family, especially as we'll all be sitting near each other for Christmas day and don't want to sit next to a smelly boy ...!

SerenityNowAKABleh · 01/12/2009 17:18

Have you thought of maybe booking her into a session at somewhere like Benefit or Mac where they teach you to apply, and then the cost of the session is redeemable against purchases. I also say NO!!! to foundation on such young skin. Maybe at the make-up place they could teach about proper cleansing.

JaneiteMightBite · 01/12/2009 19:18

Yes, yes, yes to Urban Decay. The eyeshadow palletes they do are really good value too - and their sets of eyeliners.

Otherwise Great Lash mascara is generally seen as pretty decent for a budget, teen-firendly mascara and Bourgois pots have good levels of pigmentation. Also Barry M nail varnish.

toppoptart · 01/12/2009 21:21

I wrecked a couple of carpets with those bronzing pearls (just thought id share)
