Warm, waterproof but stylish jacket?

Kitsilano · 29/11/2009 15:59

Help me please style gurus!

I am looking for a jacket that I can wear for the walk to school in the winter, wear for Sunday walks in the park or by the river, goes with wellies but not "country", not a "winter sports jacket", not a puffa.

I'd like it to be water resistant, warm, stylish, prob black, mid thigh length, maybe belted...?

Budget is not too limited for the right jacket as I imagine it lasting a while.

Does such a thing exist or should I just give up and get an anorak?

I saw a quilted, belted, thigh length coat in a magazine. Think it may have been from New Look maybe?

I have just ordered this Merrell one on recommendation of a mumsnetter.

I'll let you know when it arrives. Merrell do two or three similar styles, varying warmths. Colours seem to be limited to brown or olive green though.

Kitsilano · 29/11/2009 16:30

Couldnt see anything on the New Look website but I think I want to spend a bit more than New Look prices for something really warm that will last.

The Merrell one looks quite good - quite long though? And I did want something black.

It would be great if you could let me know what you think when it arrives nowwhatdoidony

Any other thoughts?

I've seen Aigle coats advertsied and a friend swears by them. They're advertised by Kate Humble from the wildlife programmes and look really snug and warm. I think they're around the £150 mark but are worth it.

Another Merrell.

MrsBadger · 30/11/2009 09:48

yes the Aigle Sugey] is the current front runner IMO out there - the fur comes off, as does the hood, but is pricey.

some goo dsuggestions on this thread too

Kitsilano · 30/11/2009 13:56

Aigle Sugey looks VERY nice - any idea if it is warm or just waterproof?
Off to check out other thread - thanks

I've got the one that Dexter linked to in dark brown.

It is lovely and warm, and really comfy. It was £100 from Go Outdoors and worth every penny!

MrsBadger · 30/11/2009 14:06

oh it is def warm - the 'quilted lining' is the giveaway!
Have a google for more info - I just linked to the place I found it cheapest

Kitsilano · 30/11/2009 14:30

Other thread is identical! Clearly I am not alone in my quest.

So far have narrowed it down to these 2

North face Boulevard

or

Aigle Sugey

I also have the merrell Dexter linked to in dark brown, the warmest coat I have ever had, perfect for my very long school run, 20 minute walk, 30 minute wait between one child getting out and the other one finishing school, then 20+ minute walk home.

It is incredibly warm (I live in the NE Scotland), very waterproof and it is okay style wise, not high fashion, but fits the remit perfectly.

sfxmum · 30/11/2009 14:33

I have got the Aigle and it is very waterproof and quite warm, but not as warm as quilted stuff obviously

sfxmum · 30/11/2009 14:38

that website mrsB linked has very good speedy service

NotSoRampantRabbit · 30/11/2009 14:38

I faffed for ages looking for the same kind if thing. Almost went for an Aigle but as am on maternity leave felt a little queasy about the price. I pottered into Gap a couple of weeks ago and they have knee length down coats. Stylish. Not fantastically waterproof but it would appear you can't have everything. Cost £80 (half the Aigle prices). I like it - they do it in black and brown.
