Talk mascara to me!

My mum was muttering about wanting a really good mascara for xmas (the kind she wouldn't actually spend the money on herself), but seeing as all of mine is cheap crap, I thought I was best off asking you.

I use the YSL one & having tried loads it is definitely worth the money. Don't let the name uit you off - it thickens the lashes but isn't really like wearing false lashes! You can get it in a gift set with Touche Eclat too (lightens the eye area). Worth shopping around & seeing if there are any codes etc to get it cheaper. Boots were doing 3 for 2 on luxury brands for example.

I like Lancome Hypnose so much that I pay £19.50 for it- at the moment they do a set with small eye mmake up remover and black kohl pencil for £19.

DanDruff · 23/11/2009 15:07

my mat says hypnose drama or dior show

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/11/2009 15:10

I think YSL is the best.

DanDruff · 23/11/2009 15:11

monnkey can you compare to dior?

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/11/2009 15:15

Barging in, I found the Dior Show a bit thick and prone to clumping but that may be down to clumsy application rather than the mascara... Hypnose is great.

I'm a complete mascara addict and buy every new one that comes out in the mistaken belief that they will transform my eyelashes to false proportions. I even had eyelash extensions BC (before child).

DanDruff · 23/11/2009 15:16

makeupalley reviews give maybelline full and soft good reviews and clinique naturally glossy

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/11/2009 15:17

Actually, there's a great Chanel one too. Chanel Exceptionelle, I think?

kazookazoo · 23/11/2009 15:23

I am a loyal fan of Max Factor 1000 calorie mascara, beats everything I've tried, even the pricier chic brands

monkeysmama · 23/11/2009 19:31

I've used Chanel & still do occasionally in a beautiful green. I have a Dior one though the name seems to not be on it or to have rubbed off but it's in a silver tube & is waterproof. It was nice. But I keep going back to YSL. The best cheaper one Ive found is by Rimmel & has a plastic comb brush & comes in a black pot with a red lid. Hth. I'd go for the YSL for quality & wow gift factor.

chattermouse · 23/11/2009 19:49

Agree max factor calorie 2000 is the best available.

JANEITEisntErudite · 23/11/2009 20:09

Max Factor best of the cheaper ones.
I'm using a Clarins one at the moment which is pretty good but the brush is a bit too big for me, so I make a mess!
Plan to try Hypnose next. Do not whatever you do buy the new No 7 one - it is crap - and it smells of fish.

Ronaldinhio · 23/11/2009 20:18

ysl false eyelash effect

UpsyOne · 23/11/2009 20:18

Pre-motherhood I used MAC, Lancome, Benefit and Dior but now I can only afford Max Factor Masterpiece Max I think it's the best I've ever used - can't believe I wasted so much money all those years!

ArizonaBarker · 23/11/2009 20:19

I've just started using the Cargo Lash Activator one.

I think it's supposed to do something sneaky and good but whatever, it's a really good mascara.
Really black and lengthening.

yelpol · 23/11/2009 20:27

yes, max factor masterpiece max is the best cheapie. and the best expensive one is ysl faux cils (false lash effect). ysl is about 30% better than max factor but twice the price. lancome is also good but ysl is the winner - i have tried LOTS of mascaras! dior looks goood but dries up very quickly.

Essie3 · 23/11/2009 21:03

No to Dior - it keeps flaking off and giving me weird black dandruff! Clinique naturally glossy is great.
I was going to start a thread on mascara but here's my question (since all the mascara experts are already here ): does any mascara come in a small tube? Mine keeps going off and I don't like buying a lovely Clinique one but throwing it away.

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/11/2009 21:08

Hmmm... Do they do samples of mascara? Never been given one (but have never asked) despite enormous amount of samples I usually leave counters with.

BelleDameSansMerci · 23/11/2009 21:09

I'm sure you do this already but if it's dried up a bit you can always put the tube in a cup of very hot water and it will loosen up a bit. Won't be the same as new but you might get a bit more out of it?

Essie3 · 23/11/2009 21:18

Oh, thanks Belle, couldn't remember that trick! I think they start to smell a bit odd after about 6 months...
I got the Dior Show mascara as a sample, but when I had my personal shopper in Debenhams December last year!

Oooh, maybe e-bay...

Flame · 25/11/2009 14:23

Sorry - started thread then forgot it

Thank you for oodles of suggestions - not at all have you confused me even more

YSL is the one standing out to me
