1940's/1950's fashion

I have a real weak spot for fashion of the 40's and 50's, though rarely the money to indulge my love of it.

Was wondering if anyone else did, and if anyone wore vintage or repro clothes on a regular basis?

I've picked up some old dress patterns and keep meaning to make them up. I also own 1 vintage dress which I adore!

Also, if you do wear vintage, do you have any pictures?

I adore vintage dresses but am too fat for them at the moment Only another dress size to go I htink then I'm going to have a nice rummage around the vintage dress store we have in town.
Have you seen the hair tutorials on you tube? That lady has some great videos- I'm doing a Bettie Page hairstyle when I go out tonight from one of her videos- it's very easy and looks great

Ooo also, get to Primark. I got an amazing 40s style dress in there yesterday that I'm also going to wear tonight, for about 12 quid

ooh really? Must check them out then!

I've currently got this book, just waiting for my hair to get a little longer so I can try more of the styles. Otherwise I'm tending more towards Marilyn Monroe-esque curls

Just remembered, I used to have Bettie Page style hair, this is me with rolls and a Bettie fringe

Ooo lovely My fringe is growing out so I am doing a false one by sweeping it to one side. And this has just reminded me that I forgot to buy my lipstock today Ah well, lipgloss it is then

if yo uwere being really 40s and 50s, then you would be makig the clothes and therefore be able to afford to indulge!

i love all that retro stuff: can't pull it off in my regular day, though, cos it seems too glamourous (mainlythe shoes, too high). but sometimes we go to the train station for 40s day and war things and i love to dress to the period then.

Nickelbabe - have you seen the price of fabric? Or maybe I just keep looking in the wrong places. lol

I made myself a few dresses a while back, but then I lost weight and didn't adjust them very well. Which sucks, but it's an excuse to get my sewing machine back out. At least this time thre are no cats around to try and attack the fabric/pattern/etc.

If you buy fabric from the US on ebay it still works out cheaper than buying it here. I wear a few vintage things. I'm a tall size 14 so I rarely fine vintage stuff that fits. Ebay is good as well. I recently got a brilliant 40s tea dress from a vntage shop and on the look out for a welsh tapestry coat for winter.

I buy patterns from US Ebay (Etsy is good too) but haven't bought fabric from there though. Seems daft now I think about it lol

I'm petite so find buying clothes is a nightmare. It's nice making things instead.

I love 1940s gear. I don't really get the chance to wear it tbh.
I'm thinking of making myself something as i've just finished sewing lessons and am keen to start a new project.
I love wearing my hair in victory rolls too.

Kaloki · 20/11/2009 17:58

What I'd ideally like is to wear it every day, and was dressing vintage-y about 90% of the time, till I lost weight. Which was great for my self esteem, but annoying because it meant that 90% of my wardrobe became useless.
