What is the body type that doesn't look good in an a-line skirt?

apparently I'm it.

I'd heard that a-line skirts suit everyone. But tried this on today and it made me look a very odd shape.

I bought some boden a-line skirts recently and at first i was quite shocked by the pronounced a-line shape. I wasn't sure it suited me at all. It just takes some getting used to though if your mostly used to wearing straight or floaty shapes. Dp insisted he loved them, it did not take long till i loved them too. Have had lot of compliments from strangers and friends too, so must look ok!

how long is that kew skirt? I am hunting for A-line to the knee skirts...I have awful fat thighs and a small waist so they suit me. Are you tall and thin-legged?? if so not point hiding under an A-line.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 12/11/2009 19:13

YY if you don't have a waist that goes in (or worse, that goes out) you won't suit an a-line. They are however perfect for disguising thunderthighs and making a big arse look intentional

AnyFucker · 12/11/2009 19:23

very skinny legs and a wide A-shape is not the best look

vanloadtovenice · 12/11/2009 20:16

apple!

So, if your weight gathers in your middle, an a-line prob won't be best for you!

Perfect for women with generous thighs and a waist.

In my experience, they only look wrong/frumpy if they are too long.

peggotty · 12/11/2009 20:17

What sort of skirt should an apple wear?

8oreighty · 12/11/2009 20:19

my mum is an apple, we just went to see this stylist colours lady together. She told my mum to wear knee length skirts...just to below the knee, but suppose depends on how tall you are, she is short. 5ft1 I think. And she has quite nice legs. Also to wear soft open necklines, with a skirt gives a nice waist.

peggotty · 12/11/2009 20:23

Thanks 8oreighty, I am quite tall 5ft7 with quite slim legs but the abdomen of a 6month pg woman .

NorkilyChallenged · 12/11/2009 20:25

IK - I actually tried the soft cord one and liked it (but didn't buy as it seemed quite short and I'm not sure that scrabbling around on the floor or at park with two toddlers works with a short skirt...)

Chattermouse- maybe I need to get used to the look? But not sure at all.

8oreighty - am 5'6 and that skirt was knee length (possibly just below) on me but they only had size 12 and it was much too big, needed a 10 which might have sat a little bit higher on me.

No, you have all described my exact shape as ideal a-line skirt shape - waist, big hips and thighs, decent bottom half of leg. Not particularly tall.

It made my knees look fat. Is that even possible. Made me look really bizarre and flatfooted or something. I don't know what it was.

Pity it's a lovely skirt (8oreighty you should try it)

Ah, wrong length then - mid calf and heels maybe?

LaDiDaDi · 12/11/2009 20:35

I can look odd in them. Pre this pregnanacy I was a slim size 8 but with a sticky out bottom and very slim legs. A lines often just pronounced both of these features.

midnightexpress · 12/11/2009 20:44

God, what's the body shape that does look good in an A-line skirt??

8oreighty · 12/11/2009 21:05

hmmm I should try, but if it comes below my knees I will look like a troll. I got the whitestuff denim one and it's too long. I have fat legs all over, so the skirt has to end just at the thinnest bit under the knee. I do suit A-line skirts though, as long as they emphasise waist rather than hips. I wear them with high boots, not so much in the summer.
Is it extremely A-line? some of those Boden ones are a bit over the top on me, I'm not tall enough.
