Just watching What not to wear usa back to back and wondering if this is an insult or a compliment. I can't quite figure it out.

lost...

I have turned into a soccer mom I was thinking just the other day. Never had the least interest in the game but dd is now playing it and I was standing outdoors in a freezing cold field on Saturday with a fleece cap and jacket and a thick coat, gloves etc gripping a thermosflask of coffee.

I had my hair in a ponytail too which I think is part of the uniform.

What am I supposed to be wearing/not wearing then?

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:11

I may be wrong, but I always took it to be a bit of a tongue-in-cheek insult, as in slightly pushy mums who do nothing but ferry their DCs around to a million after school activities (including football)...

Not sure what "soccer mom" style is, though.

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:12

ps. seeing as lately I seem to do mothing but drive my own DCs around to different things, I may be turning into one.

AnnaSui · 11/11/2009 12:13

Thanks, until this morning, watching stacey and clinton I had thought it meant yummymummy. I hope I've not used it in the wrong context chatting with American friend....

"mothing"
cross between mothering, nothing and mouthing it off, perhaps???

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:14

No, not yummy mummy, definitely linked to American suburbia!!!!

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:14

my American friend said she always wanted to be a soccer mom.

So I'm thining it is a positive image in the states.

AnnaSui · 11/11/2009 12:15

I get it.. I feel like a nother some days.

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:16

We need some of the Americans or overseas crowd on this thread!!!!!

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:18

As I understand it, a soccer mum is the type who ferries kids about, bakes cakes and cookies to fundraise for the team and is all community spirit and so on.

And she has a blonde ponytail in my book.

However I have maybe not got it right. I don't think soccer mom = pushy

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:20

ZZZen, thanks! Hmmm, I guess I don't qualify, then... (will need to bake more and MN less, for starters!!)

AnnaSui · 11/11/2009 12:20

hmmmm, bit disparaging innit!?

My children do extra krik and I don't work and I wear casual clothes all the time. Omg. I am one.

OP posts:
Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:21

Ah, but do you have a blond ponytail?

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:22

PMSL at not qualifying.

You get yourself one of those snap on blonde ponytails, y'hear?

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:23

actaually I may well be talking complete rubbish since I don't know myself what a soccer mom is.

Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:23
Grin
ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:23

nice looking word actaually though

cocolepew · 11/11/2009 12:25

I think it's a veiled insult. Shorthand for suburban and boring.

AnnaSui · 11/11/2009 12:25

Worse than a blonde pony tail, I have a mouse pony tail. No scrunchie though!

Unlike these women on what not to wear usa ... where do they dig up scrunchies from? family heirlooms!

OP posts:
BlueKangerooWonders · 11/11/2009 12:26

soccer mom is one who doesn't work outside the home, but as said above, spends a lot of time ferrying the dc about. Implies plenty of money and time to look good

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:26

They make the scrunchies from scraps left over from community patchwork quilting.

AnnaSui · 11/11/2009 12:28

So they are like yummymummies but suburban and boring ...? are you American BKW?

OP posts:
Geocentric · 11/11/2009 12:30

Just looked it up on urbandictionary... ouch, my eyes!!! Apparently an SUV is crucial...

cocolepew · 11/11/2009 12:31

soccer mom

getting it wrong soccer mom

ZZZenAgain · 11/11/2009 12:32

It'll be the kind of mother you see on American Disney family films. I'm thinking they are going to be nicer than nice and worthy people, mucking in , helping out, etc.

They are also going to be wearing casual but clean and tidy clothes, very groomed looking, good hair.

Teeth. Plenty of very straight white teeth.

Wholesome

Actually we need an American style magazine - how the soccer mom of today dresses kind of thing
