cotton or wool pashmina as the blankets are so static

NickNemo · 29/10/2009 20:45

Dubai airport's lovely and the loos are very clean, so no problems changing etc. DD (23 months) and I have done about 8 long hauls already, so we're experts on a lot of airports and what to do and not to do

Clothes advice has already been given, so won't repeat. Take deodorant v.important !!

Take change of clothes for yourself, also very important (DD had a huge poo all over her and my clothes on the way to Vancouver once. Luckily I had a stopover in London, so was frantically running around looking for cheap clothes in designer T3!! Ended up with a union jack tshirt and £89 jeans from Reiss!!!)

Lots of Organix snacky stuff. Perfect for managing hungry tummies without overloading on sugar, plus they're not very heavy to carry. Take the number of nappies you need, then double up!

Take those big headphone thingys for the kids so you can stick on cartoons on the backseat TVs. All airlines now have universal headphone jacks so they should fit. The small earphones they provide are useless for kids, unless you spend the whole flight holding them to their ears (I did that once!)

Forget about watching any movies, and try and get a glass of wine, just enough to relax you, but not wipe you out.

Finally, cross your fingers tightly and hope they sleep all the way through! Good luck!!

I shall look like an advert for the White Company at this rate. Albeit rather frazzled, dehydrated, and accessorised with Waybuloo stickers!

LOL at cheap clothes in the designer shops!

That's great advice Nemo, and reassuring Re Dubai. Do they have showers- and can you hire a towel??

OP posts:
NickNemo · 29/10/2009 20:57

Who are you flying with? I know that BA and Star Alliance have a lounge which has showers, which we used.

But I remember that there's a business class lounge which you can use which ahs showers. Can't remember which gate, sorry. They are very nice if you're travelling with small kids.

Don't know about towels, sorry, I usually take my own (a very thin one from Argos, does the job and is not too heavy) and my own travel wash set, so I am not reliant on airport facilities. However, I seem to remember that Dubai does those tiny body wash, shampoo bottles, though can't be sure.

NickNemo · 29/10/2009 21:00

Oh, I am almost sure you can use the business class lounge even if you're flying economy. If they say something look harassed and point to the kids and mumble something about needing to change them right now!!

AngelinaJolly · 29/10/2009 21:23

We're flying Emirates- The travel chap reckoned they are good with kids and have slightly bigger economy seats

I could take my travel towel- if I can squeeze it in next to 101 things to entertain the kiddies.

I work for BA and I am not miserable Emirates are really great !! If I can't travel BA they are my next favourite , staff are very friendly and they are good with Kiddies

Dubai do have showers and you can get towels

AngelinaJolly · 29/10/2009 22:52

Oops, sorry Mum2,3. I didn't mean to imply that all BA staff are miserable- I just had a bad experience with the ice-woman of water rationing... Glad one can hire towels at Dubai, thanks.

Angelina,
We changed at Dubai on our Australia flight. Can only speak about the business class lounge, as we got a good deal on tickets at the time and decided it would be worth it (it was ). If you manage to get in there, then it is lovely. Terrific food on offer, and showers with shampoo, towels and conditioner available. DH and I took it in turns to use the showers while the other one ate the food and played with DS and we did feel much better when we got back on the plane. We didn't venture beyond the lounge but from walking through all of the airport looked great. Emirates have all of that terminal so I would have good expectations.

Re Sinagpore, my DH flew economy last time and used the showers at Singapore so the same will be available there.

Best of all, I can confirm that Emirates are great with kids. All the staff on all our flights were keen to help entertain DS, and took turns at holding him, playing and shushing even when he was miserable with teething. Once as he started to cry, I was rising from my seat and one of the flight crew appeared, held up a hand and said 'No, no, Mum, you relax', picked up my DS and walked him up and down the aisle. I can't speak too highly of them.

AngelinaJolly · 30/10/2009 07:49

EightiesChick- that's made my day!

Can anyone pay to use the business class lounge- we are flying economy but I'd be tempted to pay for that if it's not tooo expensive?

stuffitllllama · 30/10/2009 08:00

If you fly Singapore I think you can use the miles on British Midlands. Has someone said this?

NickNemo · 30/10/2009 09:48

Angelina, I think the business class lounge is free and open to all classes, its just that not many people know about it. You may want to check that though.

The staff on Air Canada are the most miserable and unhelpful that I've seen (obviously in my opinion!!). BA was much better servicewise.

Surprisingly the food was great on Air India and Emirates, but rubbish on Air France, though the alcohol is much better on AF

Emirates are a great airline though, so you've chosen well!

MustNotEatCake · 30/10/2009 21:40

don't fly without one

baby Leon and I are snuggled up in one at this very moment and your dds are/ will be too old to be sick on yours

AngelinaJolly · 30/10/2009 21:49

That's a lovely image Cake, I think the wrap could be a Christmas present contender from DH...

hannahsaunt · 30/10/2009 22:18

Oh yes - my gorgeous cashmere pashmina wrap thing came on every flight with me as my own comfort blanket - much warmer, softer and no static like the flight blankets. Loved it. Love the ones Cakes link though not sure we could do £191 this year.
