Oh Mumsnet S&B Jury: Navy nail polish - yay or nay?

Have just painted my nails in what I thought was a gorgeous shade of rich deep navy. Am now wondering if, in fact, I am at least 20 years too old for this shade (am 38).

What say ye, oh MN sartorially wise ones?

I say yay. I have some and love it.

JANEITEPatrickNormanMcHennesy · 24/10/2009 15:12

Although according to Chanel one should be wearing green this season.

tulpe · 24/10/2009 15:15

am so not down with the kids How could I get my colours so horribly wrong for the season??!!

I love navy nail polish, but I can't wear it.

I think it depends in your skin really, I have VERY pale skin and navy looks a bit ghoulish on me, I'm better off with deep red.

But if you have a little more colour than me, I think it looks great.

tulpe · 24/10/2009 16:26

The longer I keep it on the more I like it. Also added another coat and that seems to have made a difference too - less 6th form and more polished sophisticate......

Despite being pale-ish, navy always enhances my skin tone. The shade I have is a cheapy 17 one and is very sapphire rather than dull navy.

It sounds great, I might nip out to the chemist if the rain and gale force winds die down. I am never in the house on a Sat afternoon, I should be wandering round nice shops now, but the weather is urgh, so I'm in bed with a hot choc and MN

EldonAve · 24/10/2009 16:33

yay

MadameCastafiore · 24/10/2009 16:46

YSL do a grey oe that is all the rage at the mo - I treated myself for a wedding and everyone commented on it.

Am off to the chemis on Monday me thinks to have a go with the navy!

I am 35 and feck those who say we are too young for frivolous colours on our fingers!

littlerach · 24/10/2009 17:39

Oooh Janeite, I have green.

It makes me look slightly mouldy htough, I htink.

I would like a nice dark blue.

Fleecy · 24/10/2009 18:05

I love navy nails - go for it. Am also in my thirties.

LetThemEatCake · 24/10/2009 18:17

Am 36, wore navy all summer until September when I felt the need to revisit red. No way are you too old, it's the grown-up, less gothy black.

MissWooWoo · 24/10/2009 18:17

a big YAY

CherylVole · 24/10/2009 18:18

i liked it but found that a dark berry suited my skin tone better

CybilAviationAuthority · 24/10/2009 18:19

navy? yay, verily yay

JANEITEPatrickNormanMcHennesy · 24/10/2009 19:17

I quite fancy some grey.

CybilAviationAuthority · 24/10/2009 19:20

grey is hard to wear unless you are going for 'mortuary chic'

JANEITEPatrickNormanMcHennesy · 24/10/2009 19:22

I seem to be always going for graveyard chic, I must admit - a relic from my goth days I think. And I am blessed with natural pallor.

frakula · 24/10/2009 19:51

Yay

PumpkinProject · 24/10/2009 22:17

I've got grey, navy and green - does that mean I am fashionable...[hmmm] unlikely.

Navy looks very polished and smart, I like it. Grey is great, I actually do feel very trendy wearing it. Green makes me look like I'm auditioning for the musical wicked, so disappointed.

Complete fave is diabolique by chanel. I was beginning to find rouge noir wasn't dark enough , this is darker than that without being black. Really recommend it to all!

tulpe · 25/10/2009 13:11

Thanks all Am now deeply in love with my navy nails and will make sure I use this shade more frequently.

Out of interest, which nail polish brand do you mostly use?

I am a bit of a cheap skate with nail polish and tend to go for Rimmel or 17 (clearly trying to relive my teen years ).

Are the more expensive polishes worth the dosh? How do they differ from cheaper versions?

Also, are the likes of Chanel etc as good as specialist makes such as OPI?

frakula · 25/10/2009 13:17

I use Nails Inc stuff but also have some cheapy brands.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 25/10/2009 14:11

Would never wear it myself but love it don't think you are too old at all.

pointsmakeprizes · 25/10/2009 18:56

I just tried a black gold one from MAC today - was wondering if I'm too old to pull it off too - am 34 - love the colour but not sure if I should go back and buy it. I usually go for rimmel or maybelline type ones and i have to say - this one went on far better - dried quicker and feels like it's more chip resistant so I would definitely think that the MAC ones are worth paying extra for in future.

PumpkinProject · 25/10/2009 19:59

I have some chanel ones that are 6 years old and are still great, I can't say that about rimmel or even nails inc, so I think they are worth it if you like the colour. However I always make sure I get some samples (hand cream, perfume, etc) to try to justify the price.

Barry M are the best cheap ones I've found. Lots and lots in a bottle, great selection of colours and really cheap.
