I wear them round the house but never out. I am properly fat with legs to match though not size 16 sort of fat. Wish I could wear them, bought a lovely leggingy top yesterday

thelunar66 · 23/10/2009 09:45

No.

EccentricaGallumbats · 23/10/2009 09:46

No

mimsum · 23/10/2009 09:47

sorry, but no ... frankly no-one should wear them except under-18 twiglets

LouIsAWeetbixKid · 23/10/2009 09:48

I am a size 18/20 and wear them. But I wear them with a skirt and flats or boots. No different to tights really. Would never ever wear them as just leggings on their own. I would scare myself. God knows what the general public would think!
Oh and don't wear the short calf length ones. They make you look HUGE.

BunnyLebowski · 23/10/2009 09:49

Another no. It looks shocking.

Mind you I hate them on anyone even under 18 twiglets

HoleyGhoulie · 23/10/2009 09:50

Yes. But they shouldn't.

hf128219 · 23/10/2009 09:53

No!

ChairmumMiaow · 23/10/2009 09:53

I hate leggings generally.

However I am an 18-20 and wear them under skirts and with boots like Lou. No different to tights as she said. They stay up much better too, and are warmer

I hate that there are so many young girls walking around who are not fat, but squeezed into leggings, especially those denim-look ones - UGH!

TrillianSlasher · 23/10/2009 09:54

If you would wear a skirt that showed your legs then you could wear leggings.

Oh, and make sure they fit, and aren't stretched so thin that you can see flesh tones between the weave of the fabric.

fishie · 23/10/2009 09:55

of course you can, blimey what are you supposed to wear, a kaftan? a nice velour tracksuit? but agree, full length and arse covered with a nice tunic.

i have just noticed boden have some in the preview, i should think they are fairly sturdy but wouldn't come till january. you want a good thick jersey. i got some from next and the spring went very quickly so try to find more expensive ones if you can.

EyeballsintheSky · 23/10/2009 09:55

Ugh 'denim' leggings should really be banned, they look absolutely ridiculous on anyone. Horrible vile things.

teameric · 23/10/2009 09:56

depends how fat you mean. I'm a size 14/16 and wear mine with a dress or long tunic top and boots, but then my legs aren't really that fat, it's mostly my big gut that I have to try and hide , agree with Lou though the calf length ones are a big no no, on anyone I think!

NancyBotwin · 23/10/2009 09:57

I saw someone who was rather erm horizontally challenged wearing leggings recently... admittedly I only saw her from behind which was possibly not the best angle but I did have an impulse to tap her on the shoulder and say that just because something is in fashion does not mean it is compulsory to wear it....

The leggings were stretched so much that they only came to her knees so there was a gap between them and her boots, she had some sort of longish top on but it was not long enough iyswim....

OrmIrian · 23/10/2009 09:58

Course they can. Especially with a tunic/dress sort of thing. My somewhat rotund SIL came over on Saturday wearing black leggings and a sort of tunic jobbie. Looked great TBH.

purplepeony · 23/10/2009 09:59

Yes if they want to look ridiculous, no if they want to look presentable.

teameric · 23/10/2009 10:00

I have a lovely pair of denim leggings from Dotty P's everyone thinks they are skinny jeans.
again would only wear them with a long top though.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 23/10/2009 10:09

surely this comes back down to the definition of what "fat women" is..

I am an apple shape, good shaped legs, small bum, BIG tummy and boobs. (size 16)

I have avoided leggins but am feeling more and more tempted as the winter comes, I think they would be warmer than tights.

notsoteenagemum · 23/10/2009 10:10

If you wear tights then you can wear leggings.
Also Jeggings tend to fit better than skinny jeans if you have a large waist but skinny calves and ankles like me

boodeniites · 23/10/2009 10:37

i am fat and i wouldnt they didnt look good on me first time around when i was a size 10/12 i am now 18 usually i prefer wide legged jeans etc they balance me out and make my waist smaller

Picante · 23/10/2009 12:23

Thanks! Won't be getting those then!!

OP posts:
TanyaBranning · 23/10/2009 12:25

Yes. Leggings with a knee-length dress would look fine on a larger lady. A short dress or one of those long tops might not look so great, but sod it. Skinny minnies with no arses wear tight jeans, which I personally think looks dreadful, but nobody pours scorn on them, do they?

Wear what you want!

The fashion police don't actually exist you know .

Picante · 23/10/2009 12:30

Well I'm tall and fat so I guess that's slightly better - was thinking of a tunic dress over the top?

OP posts:
crankytwanky · 23/10/2009 12:33

With a long top or dress, of course, but anyone over size 12 wearing just leggings runs the very real risk of a gargantuan camel-toe.

piratecat · 23/10/2009 12:36

depends where the fat is.

good legs, yes

bad legs, no.

i am the latter.
