I don't "get" Boden stuff.............

I shopped with Ocado for the first time yesterday - as it wasn't a huge shop so actually came in under my budget.

Along with my order today came a Boden Autumn 2009 catalogue.......I've just looked through it all and I think it's all hideous.

If I had a girl I may be tempted to dress them in some of the stuff (in girls sizes obviously) - but I really don't see the attraction for women - especially not at those prices!!!

Am I missing something really obvious, can someone explain the garish colours and styles to me..........

uphill - I'd never heard of those first 3 you mentioned - but I've just looked on the Fahri website and I actually see the appeal in some of their stuff, and if I got money for my birthday/Chrsitmas then I possibly would buy some of it same for Great Plains (which isn't actually that expensive - in fact I need some new nice long sleeved tops and may treat myself from there.....), and some of the Fat Face stuff is quite nice too.

I buy from Boden and have no qualms about it, I have always found I get my money's worth in wear and durability from them.

traceybath · 19/10/2009 12:43

Yes - its all horrid.

I mean I've got a navy boyfriend cardigan from boden which I purchased with 20% discount. It washes brilliantly, hasn't lost its shape and I don't believe is discernibly from any particular shop. Compare to cheaper one I bought in next which lost its shape after 2 washes - suddenly not such a bargain.

They do some stuff which is nice and some which isn't - like any other shop.

But it has good discounts, is good quality and has fantastic customer service.

upahill · 19/10/2009 12:49

Maggiebehave.... That'll be me then!! I got this top as an impulse buy. I was browsing, saw it and thought 'It's only 16 quid' or whatever it was. Next thing I've joined all the other sheep wandering round retail parks and the like.

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 19/10/2009 12:53

no way!?

It's a nice top though!

I've been caught out like that too. I had this navy jumper with a cream lapel on it (sounds awful) but loads of people had it and every time i put it on somebody said 'is that from next?'.

Why is next a bit embarrassing?!!? It's cooler to buy clothes in a charity shop! or am I imagining this?

Oh god that top! I see it everywhere at the moment!

There was a thread on here a few months ago where the op was trying to hunt it down.....I was already a bit then.

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 19/10/2009 12:58

ha ha, how to track down that top.

leave your house and throw a stone! there's a fifty fifty chance you'll hit somebody wearing it! (sorry uphill! [blush} forgive me, I've been there but in a different ubiquitous next top)

upahill · 19/10/2009 12:58

Maggie... It's not that nice!!! It's now worn as 'dosing round the house in the evening top' IYSWIM!!

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 19/10/2009 12:59

yeah, I think it just takes people by surprise by being a good tenner cheaper than anything else in the shop!

chattermouse · 19/10/2009 13:54

I bought from Boden this season for the first time. I have bought a lot cos i needed many new clothes following 3 kids in 4 years. Most of my stuff was maternity gear or pretty old stuff i wore pre kids (when my stomach was really flat........).

I am really happy with my new stuff. It is all really well made and looks great on me. Also the colours span throughout all of the range so it is simple to get lots of tops and bottoms that work with each other. Some of the stuff i got is obviously Boden, other bits are just plain colours. I will probably buy a couple of things from there each season now but am glad i chose to restock my wardrobe at Boden. I have some great basics now that i plan to wear for a fair few years. This should work as the styles aren't really 'this season' so should do for the long haul.....

wideratthehips · 19/10/2009 13:54

i've seen my son's teacher wear that top too!

MorrisZapp · 19/10/2009 13:56

I'm happy to slag off Boden catalogues all day long but not the people who buy it iyswim.

The catalogue is truly boak inducing, but at the end of the day, they're just selling jumpers, shirts, skirts etc and we all wear some of them don't we?

I've got some boden stuff and I love it - well made, decent quality, and not every second person is wearing the same thing (round here, anyway!).

So let's all have a laugh and a mock about Amelie the model and her desire to learn Japanese etc but not at the very ordinary people who buy the jumpers, which are unremarkable in real life anyway.

alwayslookingforanswers · 19/10/2009 13:57

Morris - DH did point out the "lifestyle" that was being sold with the clothes - convertible car in the background, croquet on the lawn with the children

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 19/10/2009 14:01

Oh aye the 'lifestyle' stuff is laughable.

Does anybody else suspect that the very versatile 'Cockney geezer' featured at the beginning of the new catalogue (he's a taxi driver, runs a newspaper stand and is also a bus conductor, quite a feat as they have been phased out) is actually Johnnie Boden's dad?

He wears his jeans like a proper toff [smil]

GhoulsAreLoud · 19/10/2009 14:04

MaggieBehaveOutGuising I knew it was going to be exactly that top before I clicked on it

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 19/10/2009 14:09

I think they shot themselves in the foot with their last catalogue, when it came to the lifestyle... those women weren't cath kidston types with cut 8 yr olds who are hard to shp for (no preteenie stuff in Boden!) but they look like 22 year old east european models. there is nothing WRONG with that at all...

But if they used a model who looked like she could actually be (maybe) in her early thirties and was plausibly english and so therefore really the boden embassador, it would have 'sold' the lifestyle more to me.

I can't buy into 'boden - the lifestyle' from 19 year old Mette and or Inga.,,,, dykwim??

GwarchodwrPlant · 19/10/2009 14:14

I hate the grown-up stuff but have been known to make the odd purchase of baby outfits in the sale and with a further customer discount on top of that! The boys clothes make a change to all the dull sludge colours that you get from other shops.

paisleyleaf · 19/10/2009 14:16

Thing is, even the models don't look good in a lot of the Boden clothes.
There's not many people can look good in a top like this

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/10/2009 14:24

I knew it was going to be that top Maggie. It's everywhere...

I do buy Boden and generally I've been pleased with what I have got. IMO it's like any shop though, some of it you hate, most of it you can take or leave and there's the odd bit you really like and buy.

tis not compulsory

alwayslookingforanswers · 19/10/2009 14:33

I know - but I thought as I'm fairly easy to please with clothes I would find somethingI like in there.
