Was anyone listening to the bit about jeans on Woman's Hour this morning?

One of the 'fashion experts' (I forget her name) said you can only get away with wearing jeans when you're over 25 if :

  1. you've got slim legs
  2. you are over 5 ft 5

I fail on number 2

Please someone come and tell me she's talking bollocks. Or at least tell me why a short-arse in jeans is a bad thing.

fail on both then...

8oreighty · 13/10/2009 16:10

how annoying, having my colours style everything done on friday, will report back what she says about a pear shaped short arse.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 13/10/2009 16:11

I fail on both counts but still wear them. At the end of the day what are other options;

a dress/skirt - not very practical for dog walking.

leggings/trakkie bottoms - I think even less flattering than jeans and not smart enough for my liking. Apart from when dressed up leggings/tunic combo but again not practical for dog walking.

Black trousers? Bit boring? Can't see that they'd be any more flattering.

Cords - ditto above.

What did this woman say we should be wearing instead?

Hullygully · 13/10/2009 16:12

A burka

needtomoveon · 13/10/2009 16:16

Why do they allow these idiots out of the institution to which they should so clearly be confined? The only thing I would actually ban in terms of fashion is the witless opinions of silly fashionistas.

Wear what you like and to hell with whoever it was on the Radio. Shame on you Woman's Hour there are much better things for women to talk about (serious and frivolous)

pseudscorner · 13/10/2009 16:16

Nope she didn't give alternatives, and she didn't give a reason why it was A BAD THING.

Maybe she really thought all short and/or plump women should hide themselves away so as to not offend anyone with thier hideous fashion mistakes

MusterMix · 13/10/2009 16:17

i do think fat arses look fater in jeans
and low slung ones

pseudscorner · 13/10/2009 16:19

I tend to agree Mustermix - but my arse isn't that bad, honest. I'm just short

OP posts:
LordVetinarisApprentice · 13/10/2009 16:24

Muster you're lucky you are offline on MSN I am short and have a big arse. I love my jeans and since my arse is big anyway I can't think that dark coloured denim is going to make it look any bigger!

TheCrackFox · 13/10/2009 16:28

I think what the fashion expert meant to say was that you shouldn't leave the house if you are 25+ or under 5ft5. Sad but true. The fashion police dictate that you should stay in your PJs and dressing gown all day. Don't bother having a shower as the fashion police have declare that you are a non-entity therefore no one will look at you. In all probability you will die alone and surrounded by cats.

Hullygully · 13/10/2009 16:28

My arse is whopping and it looks FAB in denim shorts over lacy tights!

boodeniites · 13/10/2009 16:32

im fed up with"experts" telling me what i should and shouldnt wear i like my jeans and some of them are shock bootcut so ner

needtomoveon · 13/10/2009 16:33

Aha - just seen that it was Jane Garvey who did the interview. Cannot abide that woman. Jenni Murray rules (also like Ritula Shah and Martha Kearney) JG does that grating thing of always trying to make herself man-friendly

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 13/10/2009 17:35

I think a lot of women, irrespective of age or height wear badly fitting jeans....

southeastastra · 13/10/2009 17:36

great radio 4 says i can wear my jeans

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 13/10/2009 18:13

Whats wrong with Bootcut?

I know that Skinny ones are in but am I committing some awful faux paux by clinging onto Bootlegs? I'm a Size 14 and look dreadful in Skinny jeans.

thedollshouse · 13/10/2009 18:15

The woman is talking rubbish.

Nothing wrong with bootcut jeans, they are only considered a sin on Mumsnet. I look a hell of a lot better in bootcut than I do in skinny thats for sure!

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 13/10/2009 18:21

I'm five foot 2 and size 12 (sometimes a ten!) so I fail too. But I think nobody really examines your figure too closely in jeans. If you wear more carefully thought out trousers, it can invite a second look which actually draws attention to your bum... dykwim?

duckyfuzz · 13/10/2009 18:22

JG fails on both those counts, I know I've spent a day at a spa with her

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 13/10/2009 18:23

Pseudcorner, I hear you. It's true I'm not tall, BUT...... not every sartorial choice I make revolves around "trying to look taller". Yes, I wish I was a bit taller, but I'm not apologising for being small or looking small either! I'm small. Get over it! (I'll get a t-shirt made up to go with my jeans!)

janmoomoo · 14/10/2009 16:54

Total rubbish. EVERYONE wears jeans ALL THE TIME. Go out anywhere and 90% of people will be wearing jeans.

I bet the fashionista talking was 22, 5ft10 and 8 stone nothing. She will learn.....
