Am sure it's been done to the death, but what do SAHM's/WFHM's wear if not jeans?

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 13/10/2009 07:04

Am so sick of jeans, my idea of having a smarter day is the only skirt I own, with knee boots, but, even that's made out of denim.

Oh I don't iron unless it is do or die, so lovely linen type trousers are 100% out of the question, and I don't do anything even remotely sporty-ish type unless I am actually doing anything sporty-ish!

I have ideas of dresses over leggings etc, but everytime I try a combination on, it just doesn't feel right, and at 5ft 6 and a size 12/14 top, 14/16 bottom, I am a bit short and stumpy to look anything like what I want to look like in a dress and leggings combo!

I need help, damn it, I need MN! (And some new boobs/smaller tummy, but that's a different thread....)

Cords, lots of them... but please see the other thread for what colours not to wear!

FabMum1 · 13/10/2009 14:06

Oh I am so pleased I have just read this. I live in jeans, Monday to Friday. Very rarely I'll 'maybe' wear my Gap chinos, only if I'm feeling adventurous. I own one skirt, which I rarely wear and the rest is casual casual casual.

Thanks ladies I have now got some wonderful ideas on how to change my wardrobe. For me its going to be....
Leggings
Jumper dresses
Tunics
Long cardigan

My only problem now is footwear....
I have some knee length flat brown boots, converse, Keds, what do I need to get...?

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 13/10/2009 14:13

But, big but, can you do leggings if you have an oversize backside? Especially if you're talking knitted dress over the top, that is bound to cling in all the wrong places?

Also, am weary of the elastic waistband on leggings, have very soft empty belly, is it not going to give me two bellies?

CaptainNancy
Which is the thread on colours and cords? Would love to read it but can't seem to find it....

Im boring. Usually jeans or cords every day. But almost always wear pearl necklace and nice earings. If not pearls, then a silk scarf.

I have a gorgeous pair of dark purple silk pyjamas, and an equally gorgeous, long silk robe. Generally I do nothing more exciting than sleep in them, but, just occasionally, I treat myself to a daytime shower and wear them as daywear. Only indoors, mind you, but still it feels niiiiiiice.

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 13/10/2009 16:49

Think the cord's thread is the 'Is there a fashion initiation into the middle class....' or something, have only read the first few posts and yes, moss green and mustardy browny/yellowy are deffo not the colours you want!

OP posts:
boodeniites · 13/10/2009 16:58

i love Moss Green it goes with my eyes

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/10/2009 17:03

Am a SAHM.
I wear wide leg jeans/skinny jeans.
Cord flares.
Sometimes 'utility' style things.
Fitted black trousers.

Never frocks.

When belly gets bigger will wear maternity dungas, but they will be denim.

Not much use either.

pagwatch · 13/10/2009 17:06

I am a Sahm but I never ever ever wear trousers or jeans. Don't even own any.
I wear dresses almost every day. I have loads in cord, silk and jersey
I like jersey as no ironing and I layer t-shirts under and cardigans and jackets over. Easy

thepobblewhohadnotoes · 13/10/2009 17:47

So pagwatch, where do you buy your jersey dresses please?

CaptainNancy · 13/10/2009 21:05

This is the thread

TeenyTinyToria · 13/10/2009 22:04

I wear jeans most of the time, a mix of denim and bright coloured/multi leopard print skinny jeans.

Also wear lots of tunic tops, wee short dresses, leggings, tights and jumper dresses. Rarely wear skirts. I prefer jeans, tbh. Only black trousers I own are from waitressing.

salvolatile · 13/10/2009 22:27

Thanks Putdown - you have summarised everything perfectly! I have Written It Down on a Post It Note. Seriously. Now, I am 48 and a size 10/12 so why can't I find any leggings that suit me? am I looking in the wrong places or am I too old....

Twirl · 14/10/2009 04:06

Thanks for the thread link!

PutDown · 14/10/2009 08:46

Salvolatile, try Marks and Spencer leggings, the 'Indigo Collection' ones are on special offer at t he moment for £8.
I find them thicker than others I have tried for a similar price, and therefore more flattering!
I have tried New Look,Sainsbury's,Peacocks,TopShop, always thinking that 'they are only leggings, why pay more?' but the y are all baggy/see through/too short after a wash, bar the Topshop ones which were ok.

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 14/10/2009 09:46

Oh yes, I like the way this thread is going, where do you all buy these lovely non-jean things?

Need help.

Even considered looking in Next

OP posts:
PutDown · 14/10/2009 10:02

Wide leg trouses....Boden,Autograph,Monsoon,occasionally Next
Cardigans...again Boden, kew,Phase Eight, White Stuff,Fat Face,.Marks (usually Autograph)also smaller boutiquey places for Noa Noa,Sandwich,Avoca.Plus Ebay for these makes as well.

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 14/10/2009 10:13

So you like Boden a leeetle bit?

Next is just wrong. And the more I think about the shite clothes they put out the more wrong it feels!

Think I might have a looksy at Boden, I know it's an MN cardinal sin but I've never 'got' the Boden thing...

OP posts:
PutDown · 14/10/2009 10:21

I like Boden for some plain knitwear/tunics/trousers.
Never do the head to toe Boden llok,or the recognisable prints!
I do most shopping on the internet,so it is easy.Always hunt out discount codes though!

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 14/10/2009 10:38

No I just don't get the Boden thing. It looks like clothes made for 60+yo's, who want to look 'hip' and 'wit' it'

Says she who lives in jeans!

OP posts:
PutDown · 14/10/2009 11:23

Well am not quite that old,Lightning!
Only early 40's.
I know w hat you mean, but I always jazz things up with chunky jewellery, reasonably trendy footwear, leggings so I hope I don't ;ool ready for my bus pass yet!
I try and choose carefully from Boden!

chattermouse · 14/10/2009 14:26

I am a sahm and i generally avoid jeans. they must be the least comfortable trouser option out there. Today i am wearing wide leg velvet trousers and a smart fitted cardi with a necklace. I often wear skirts and vests/tops with cardis. You just need to go shopping for a few new bits. Some necklaces and some trousers and skirts to broaden your choices a bit.

IWroteOffLightningMcQueen · 14/10/2009 14:37

I'm sure you don't look ready for your bus pass PutDown!

I do need to go shopping. Have looked all over the 'net for some inspriation but then when I find something nice, I question the fit/material/colour/something else. Need to go and touch, see, try on!

Will have to be in a couple of weeks though, have got no packing done today at all. Am feeling v. sorry for myself, have stinking cold, and two under 3's with stinking colds, and another one due home from school in a while with another stinking cold, and then DH will be home, with you guessed it, a stinking cold! Going through boxes of tissues like there is no tomorrow.

We're moving house in 10 days, now is not the time for shopping colds

SERIOUS question, girls - am I (ahem) too old for leggings at 48? Only I don't want to look like I am trying too hard . Problem is I have some nice tunic dresses that need more than tights iyswim and I am a curvy short legged 5'6" size 12 so wide legged trousers on me make me look squat.....
